　John, for whom the consequences of resistance would not be swift death, has lost nearly all vestiges of self-respect, but at least he is not“a nigger-lover.” まったく難しい文章ではないと思うのですが、 うまくキレイな日本語に訳せず困っております。 それから最後の“a nigger-lover”という語の意味も、もしご存知でしたら教えてください。 （ちなみに主語のJohnは白人です。） どうぞよろしくお願いいたします。

「抵抗した結果が直ちに死につながることはなかったものの、ジョンは自尊心をほとんど跡形もなく失うこととなってしまった。しかし、少なくとも彼は『黒ん坊好き』ではない。」 “a nigger-lover”の意味についてはNO.2の方の言われるとおりです。「nigger」はかつてはアフリカ系アメリカ人の呼称として頻繁に使われていましたが、60年以降の公民権運動の進捗とともに差別用語として排斥され、今は使われていません。 童謡の「10人のインディアン」も元は「Ten　little　niggers」であったものがindiansに変えられた、と記憶しています。差別か文学か、と論争になった「ちびくろさんぼ」のなかでもこの単語は使われていたと思います。 いずれにせよ「nigger」も「nigger－lover」も現代では歴史あるいは文学の中でしか見られない表現といってよいでしょう。 （訳語の方も原文の趣旨を反映させた差別感のある表現になっている点はご了解ください）

こんにちは。konkichi といいます。よろしく。 the consequences of resistance would not be swift death の部分は仮定法過去なので、言いたいのは現在のことになります。 直訳風に訳せば、次のようになるでしょうか。 「抵抗の結末が早期の死を招くということにはならないであろうが、ジョンは自尊心のほとんど全ての欠片を喪失してしまったのである。しかし、彼は少なくとも黒人解放支持者では無いのである。」 これを、当時の状況や物語の雰囲気を想像して意訳すれば、 『抵抗するがためにすぐに死んだりするようなことはないだろうが、ジョンは自尊心のかけらも全くといってよいほどに失くしてしまった。しかし、彼は少なくとも黒ん坊が好きな人間では無い。』 のような感じになるでしょうか。 nigger については、他の方が説明されている通りです。あの誰も知っている数え歌も、昔は tiger の部分が nigger だったのです。（下記に最初だけ書きました。）でも、私が尋ねた限りでは、現代のアメリカ人もカナダ人もニュージーランド人も知っていました。 Eeny, meeny miny mo, Catch a tiger by his toe .................. 私は小さい頃、黒ン坊というのは差別用語とは思わずに使っていました。でも、nigger というのは重い歴史があるので、決して使うべきではないですね。 では、また。

翻訳はヘタッピなんで、単語の意味だけ。 niggerとは黒人のことです。（悪い言葉） で、nigger-loverとは黒人解放支持者とのことです。 黒人差別が激しかった頃に、彼らの側に立つ白人を 同じ様な意味合いで蔑視してLoverとしたのでは ないでしょうかねぇ。（想像） 口語系の英単語は英辞郎に載ってる事がありますよ。 尚、私個人は黒人の方々をその様には思っておりません。 念の為。

exciteのページを使って調べたら ジョン(抵抗の結果はその人のために速い死でなかった)は、自尊の証拠をほぼすべて失いました。しかし、少なくとも、彼は「黒人恋人」ではありません。 という結果になりました。 参考までに
