なぜ「This book is big」ではなく「This book is a big」とならないのか？

>1冊の本という意味だと考えています。 もっと深く理解するためには、「１冊の特定されていない（不特定の）本」と考えなければなりません。 This is a big book. This is the big book. 上記二つは違いますよね？ 「a」という不定詞は、特定されていない一つの数えられる名詞に付き、 「the」という定詞は、特定される名詞に付きます。 話が脱線してしまいましたが、ご質問の４の文に「a」が必要ない理由は、単純にbigが形容詞だからです。

This is a onion.という文のThisをTheseにかえる問題です。 答えはThese are onions.です。These are some onions.だと×になってしまいます。説明を受けた時は意味のちがいとsomeと決めてしまうのはおかしいというようなことを言われたのですが、混乱しています。 分かりやすく教えていただけないでしょうか。どちらでもいいように思うのですが…
