Which direction of the force should be defined as positive?という質問での意味は？ 重ねて質問しますことお許しください。添付の図のような簡単な系での質問です。 英語で以下のような質問がありました。 「Consider a case of an external force acts on the mass of this system. Which direction of the force should be defined as positive? Is it the upward direction or the downward direction?」 図では外力は描かれていませんが、外力があった場合を考えているようです。上向きに力を加える べきか、下向きに力を加えるべきかを聞いてきていますが、「the force should be defined as positive」の意味が今一つ分からないのです。positiveに作用するようにするにはというこ とでしょうか。しかしpositiveに作用するとはどのような振動の状態なのでしょうか。 ヒントを頂けると助かります。 よろしくお願い致します。

positiveは一般には肯定的とかいう意味ですが、ここでは正方向としてという意味合いです。したがって「the force should be defined as positive」は「正方向として定義されるべき力」という意味になります。 つまり、上向き・下向きのどっちを正方向として定義すべきかということを訊いているのです。
