Although one may think that the marginal propensity to absorb will be less than unity this need not be the case. Alexander(1952) speculated that unemployed workers who obtain jobs are likely to have a high propensity to consume and that an increase in income may well stimulate a great deal of investment. Workers who obtain jobs may well be decide to spend more than their income by borrowing against future prospective income.

If the marginal propensity to absorb is less than unity then a rise in income will raise the income to absorption ratio and so improve the current account. Whereas, if income were to fall this would raise the absorption to income ratio (as absorption would fall by less than income) which would worsen the current account. There are two important effects on income that need to be examined, the employment effect and the terms of trade effect.

Even if there are increased net exports earnings (which relies on the Marshall-Lerner condition being fulfilled) the negative terms of trade effect works to reduce national income. Even if income rises overall, it is still not clear what the implications of a or in income are for the current account, as this will depend upon the value of the marginal propensity to absorb. If this is less than unity then an increase in income generated by the increase in net exports leads to an improvement in the current account because income rises by more than absorption.

Some companies’ profits will benefit from a devaluation as export as export sales rise, however, some firms that are reliant on imported inputs may find that the costs increases reduce their profit margins. Similarly, some workers will be able to protect themselves against the induced price rise because they are represented by strong trade unions, while others with no union representation may not secure compensating rises. The overall effect on direct absorption will then depend on whether the companies and workers that gain have a higher propensity to absorb than those that lose.

It tends to be the case that the group on fixed incomes are the poor who have a high propensity to absorb, while those on variable incomes are better off and have a lower propensity to absorb. To the extent that income is redistributed from those with fixed incomes to those with variable incomes, this income redistribution effect will tend to reduce direct absorption.

There have been many changes occuring in the Japanese economy and these changes have had various consequences on other aspects of Japanese society. For instance, many Japanese people feel that their incomes have been becoming less equal. After poll results were published, members of the present administration had to answer to accusations of being responsible for the widening income gap. Economists have suggested that the idea of equal income distribution in Japan was appropriate 20 years ago. However, now may be the time to abandon this idea. Economists have also stated that the recent growth of the income gap may be due to the ongoing transformation of the Japanese society into a more competitive one. This transformation began with changes in corporate organization. Since the early 1990s, company structures have changed to reduce personnel cost. Many companies have apparently given up the concept of lifetime employment. A large number of full-time workers have been replaced by part-timers, many of whom have no claim to retirement benefits or health insurance. Factories have been moved overseas, where lower labor costs allow for higher profits. These efforts are intended to recreate the Japanese economy by making it more competitive. Competition has also been encouraged within companies through the introduction of a performance-based salary system. Performance rewards, which were previously uncommon, have increased motivation among workers. This newly found motivation has generated a certain level of desire for better schooling because of the opportunities that exist for skilled workers to obtain profitable positions. To keep this newly competitive labor market fair and open, equality of educational opportunities is necessary. However, access to education commonly is tied to family income as rich parents can afford to send their children to famous and more expensive schools. If this connection is ignored, it could produce a situation in which only children of rich parents can receive the education required to get well-paid jobs later in life. Provided that education is accessible to children independent of their parent's income, the change into a more competitive society may boost career opportunities for any aspiring individuals. Economists tend to agree that the income gap is common in this age of globalization. No one can deny that competition usually brings about greater income variation. The widening income gap, caused in part by increased competition, is perhaps the price the people have to pay for the revival of the Japanese economy. Only the future will tell if this is a price worth paying.

Everyone was to be given an equal chance to rise or fall on the social ladder according to individual abilities. This meant that everyone would be given an equal chance to run the social race---- not that everyone would have equal income or social status. Second, equally of opportunity was considered good for the individual because it allowed a person to find the best place in the economic system in which to develop personal interests and abilities.
