only の意味の違いについて
内容一致問題で本文（１）にたいして選択肢（２）は誤答です。なぜですか？ (1)Recent research has revealed only one significant difference between male and female gossip. (2)According to recent research, the fact that(省略）is only one significant difference between male and female gossip. 解説では(1)のonlyは「たった一つだけの重要な違い」(2)は「一つの重要な違いにすぎない（他にもある）」と書いてありました。(1)は形容詞で(2)は副詞でしょうか？もしそうだとしたら、なぜですか？誰か説明お願いします。

Recent research has revealed 最近の研究は（明らかにした） reveal は他動詞ですから、その目的語が必要であり、当然それはその後に続く only one significant difference である事は間違いありません。 この only からdifference までを二つに裂く理由はなにもありません。 で、一気に（たった一つの重要な違い）という言葉になります。 意味上ではその研究結果が正しい正しくないを問わず、「その研究は（たった一つの違い）を明らかにした」わけです。 しかし、 （２）はあくまでも According to (the) recent research 「その最近の研究によると」と言っているので、他の研究、他の学者、などその他のいろいろな研究結果があるかも知れないと言うことだと思います。

前者は「区別する、違いが生じる」、後者は「違いが分かる」 という意味ですよね。 ある文法問題でこのようなものがありました。 Can you () between peas and beans? この括弧の正解は後者なのですが、何故前者はダメですか？ 「peasとbeansの違いが分かりますか」となり、make the differenceでもいけそうな気がします。 何か明確な理由が分かる方いらっしゃいましたら、教えて下さい。
