better reserved
今英語を訳しているところなのですが、どうしてもわからない表現に ぶつかってしまいました。 彼は学位を取る為に大学に行った。それは、と続いて↓の文になるのですが、 It was an intention better reserved; この意味がわからなくて・・・。このあとには for it was not the curriculum, but the resounding freedom、the exposure to many people......(中略）..... unleashed his creative fervor. となります。 最初は「良い将来のために意図したことだった」みたいな意味かなと思ったのですが、reservedの意味を調べ始めるとだんだんわからなくなってしまい・・・全く自信がなくなってしまいました。もしどなたかよいideaがありましたらどうぞお教え下さい。

well reserved ： 人々に大切にされる からの類推で、 「それはより大切にしたい（守るべき）目的であった。」 では後にうまくつながらないでしょうか？

回答どうもありがとうございます！ 「守るべき/大切にしたい」という表現もありですよね。 この文字を見ていたら、「取っておきたい」という意味も考えられるかしら？ と思い始めました。

What I meant was that it was missing something. メールの中のこの意味がわからないと送ったら、下記のように説明してくれました。 仕事で疲れて、電車にゆられてぼーっとして・・・という感じだと思うのですが、missing somethingが、どういうことなのか、よくわからないので、教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。 The ride on the train has a feel about it, the swaying of the cars, the click and clack of the train over the track, The look of the outside and all the people inside. gives it personality. Well that day the train felt it had no personality, I guess I was tired work is very busy, I really need to find a better job with better hours.

It was something they had talked about many years earlier. 上記の英文のmany years earlierはどういう意味ですか？many years agoでしたら辞書に載ってましたが、many years earlierは辞書に載ってなかったので分かりません 教えて下さい。よろしくお願いします。
