文の意味が良くわからない

生涯ずっと自分の家を持ちたいものだと望んではきたが、（実際に）家を持てるだろうなどと思ったことはなかった。 意訳です。that節がつく場合、wishの後は仮定法、hopeの後は直接法になります。実現性と関係のない「望み」がwish、実現してほしい「望み」がhopeだと思います。

I don't dare to do ～ ＝do する勇気が無い。 となるので、 この生涯マイホームが欲しいとずっと思ってきたけども、 （本気で）（マイホームを）持とうと思う（願う）勇気がなかった。 ever は本当に、まじで、実際に、本気で、など文を強調。 マイホームを持つことはこれまで遠い夢で、現実味をもってリアルに願うなんて、そんな勇気すら持てない見果てぬ夢でした、という雰囲気じゃないでしょうか。文脈に合いますか？

failは他動詞で使うと 期待にそむく, …を見捨てる, 落第点をつける などがあるのですが、下記の文の意味がよくわかりません。 Where had I failed my son? I wondered. Why couldn't I motivate him to help him succeed? I felt if he didn't excel in school, he would be unable to create a life of his own or cupport himself- and perhaps a family someday. よろしくお願いします。
