I'm sorry but I guess I missed your point. ＞この場合のbut、全然ヘンではありませんよ。 I missed your pointに対して、I am sorryと言っています。続く I guess という表現にも、「君の言うことが分からないのは僕であって、君が悪いのではない」というニュアンスが出ています。 つまり、話し手が何かについてvigo24さんに対して一生懸命話してくれたとしますよね。でもちょっと内容が複雑で、聞いているvigo24さんが混乱してしまい、「ごめん、もう一回ゆっくり話してくれる？」と言うことがありますよね。これはその感覚の butで、「ごめん、君が話してくれているのは分かるし、ありがたいことだよ。でも、どうしても君の言わんとするポイントが僕には掴めないんだよ」ということです。 社交辞令的な意味合いも含めて、この「I am sorry but ～」という言い回しは、とてもよく使われます： ・I am sorry but I have no idea what you are talking about.（悪いけど、君が何の話をしているのか全然分からんなぁ） ・I am sorry but it is the rule. You cannot enter without a permit.（気の毒だけど、それが規定なんだ。パスがないと入れないんだよ） これが「的外れな話かもしれないが」と訳されているのには、ちょっと疑問を感じますねぇ。それなら、I may be wrong but ～ みたいな言い方になっていたハズだと考えます。 ご参考までに。

I’ve been dating a guy for several months, and I’m unsure whether I’m being overly sensitive to his tendency to state the truth as blunt fact or whether he is edging toward emotional abuse. For instance, during a conversation about the future of our relationship, he was saying things like, “You know, you’ve been with a lot of guys, and you’ve got student loan debt” as some of my negative traits—both are true. He was using the above as justification that I should act more appreciative of him and our relationship. believeとthinkについて教えてください。 知り合いとメールのやり取りしています。 その内容は私があることでそれは無意味なことだった。 私たちはもう気持ちが通じ合ってないようね、と伝えたところ、、。 返信が「You are wrong.but I believe it's too late.」と返って来ました。 このI believe it's too lateの訳し方だと私は遅すぎたと思う。だと思うのですがどうしてthink(思う）を使わないのでしょうか？ それとも違った訳の意味になるのでしょうか？ アドバイスいただけませんか？

ご回答どうもありがとうございます。 「I am sorry but ～」を今まで私は「すみませんが（申し訳なく思いますが）、～です。」と直訳しておりました。 ご提示の例 ・I am sorry but I have no idea what you are talking about. ・I am sorry but it is the rule. You cannot enter without a permit. ではこのやり方が通用するのですが、 私の質問の例をこの方法で訳すと訳が分からなくなってしまいます。 なぜなんでしょうか？
