米アマゾンで注文したら・・・
さっき投稿しましたが、文章が一部抜けたままだったので、こちらでもう一度書きます。下のものはあとで削除します。 米のアマゾンで新品だけれども値引きしている本を注文しました。すると、折り返しのメールに、以下のような文章がありました。 Please be aware that items in this order may be subject to California's Electric Waste Recycling Act. If any items in this order are subject to that Act, the seller of that item has elected to pay any fees due on your behalf. California's Waste Recycling Act ということは、この本は古本なのでしょうか？ 状況がよくわからないので、詳しく解説していただけますでしょうか。よろしくお願い致します。

If any items in this order are subject to that Act, the seller of that item has elected to pay any fees due on your behalf. ただいまのご注文の品がカリフォルニア電気製品廃棄物再生利用法 に該当するかもしれませんのでご承知おきください。 今回ご注文された中に当該再生利用法に該当するなんらかの商品が ある場合には、当該商品の売り主はあなたに代わって定められた 料金を支払う決まりになっています。 -------------- つまり、念のためこういう性格の商品(本)です、という単なる但し書 きです。新古本の取引で電気製品廃棄物もないもんだと思いますが。

saitaohanaさんの注文された書籍は、まず新品を注文されたなら確実に新品でしょう。 「リサイクル云々」と書いてあるから、古本であるというわけではありません。 アマゾンでは電化製品も扱っているので、「法の適用の対象となる品の場合」としてその文章が付け加えられたと思います。 California's Electronic Waste Recycling Actとは、有毒な産業廃棄物となる、鉛、水銀、カドミウム、Cr6+（六価クロミウム）、PBB（ポリ臭素化ビフェニル）、PBDE（ポリ臭化ジフェニル・エーテル）が使用されている製品（電化製品に限らず）を販売する際、この法律で決められた電子製品廃棄物再利用費（electronic waste recycling fee）を、小売店が消費者から徴収するしくみになっています。 しかしこのアマゾンのセラーは、その再利用費は「自分持ち」と謳っています。少しでも値段を下げるためでしょう。 書籍は上記に当てはまりませんので、件の文章は気にしなくても良いです。

この場合のis subject to the Actは、翻訳の現場では「同法の適用対象となる」と訳します。また、itemは「品目」と訳します。

ご回答有難うございます。 やはり、古書、というか、新古書、という類なのでしょうか？ かなり前に発行された本なので、売れ残ったものを安く販売しているのかとは思いました。 米国では、新古書、なんてあいまいな分類はしないので、すっきりと”古書”になるのでしょうかしょうか？ 中古品には、こういった法律が適用されるものなのですか？ やっぱり外国の事情はよくわからないです。

ご回答ありがとうございました。 本を購入したのに何故ここに、electricという単語が出てくるのか、謎でした。 カリフォルニアでは中古品の取引にはいつもこの法律が適用されるのでしょうか？ この本はやはり、新古書になるのでしょうか。 日本では新古書と言うあいまいないい方をしますが、米国では売れ残ったりした本をseconnd handとして扱うのですか？
