こんにちは。いつも頑張っていらっしゃいますね。毎回ご丁寧なお礼のお返事を有難うございます。 No.1の補足に書かれてあるように I kept having terrible thoughts about home という文が、ご質問文の前にあるのだとしたら、このAbout whatのaboutは前文のterrible thoughtsにかかっていく前置詞でしょうね。 そうすると、whatは主語となる疑問代名詞で「何が」と訳します。 wouldの用法はNo.2さんの回答の通り、when節が過去形になっているため、主節でも時制を合わせ、willの過去形になったものです。訳は「～した時、どうなるだろう」と訳します。 ２つの文を合わせて訳すと、 「家に関する恐ろしい考えをずっと抱いていた。やっと家に着いたと思ったらいったい何が起こるのだろうかという、恐ろしい考えを」と、前文のAbout homeを言い換えた一文です。 これって、「鬼嫁日記」の英訳ですか？？（笑）以上ご参考までに。

俺が思いついたのはこれなんですけど、 What did you do first when you back home? google先生によると、こんな表現もあるようです。 What did you do when you first got home? 後者のfirstの位置が俺には不思議。そして違和感。 だれか俺のモヤモヤを取り除いてください。
