はじめまして。No 1 氏のご説明どうりですが、もうちょっと分かりやすく分解してご説明したいと思います。多少横槍的ですが、わかりやすく説明するための自分の練習のつもりです。 that ＝ 接続詞で、that ～「～ということ」という、S＋V＋C の C の部分をまとめる役目をしています。次に、what may be a real issue は、that 節の部分の主語で、「現実に問題となるであろうこと」という意味です。そして will not be seen as real の部分が述語で、「現実味を帯びないであろう」もしくは、「現実のものとはみなされないであろう」（see ～ as …＝「～を…とみなす」という意味です）という意味ですから、その後に続く、outside the United States が、場所を表す副詞で、「合衆国以外の場所で（国で）」という意味で、すべてをまとめて、 「現実に問題となるであろうことも、合衆国国外では、現実の問題として扱われないであろうことにこそ、大きな危険性があるのだ」くらいの訳でいかがでしょう？

The great risk is that..... の that は complementizer that といい、that 以下の節へのつなぎです。 I said THAT .... The most important thing is THAT.... とかとおなじですね。 「大きなリスクは THAT だ」というわけです。 what は the thing(s) that と置き換えれば簡単ですよね。 The thing that may be a real issue 「現実の問題になるだろう事」が主語ですね。

大きな問題はthat以下のことである、という構文で、 that節の中にまた主語と述語があります。 つまり、 大きな問題はthat以下のことである。 that以下のこととは、 本当に問題であるかもしれないことというのは、US以外では現実と 考えられないだろうということ というわけです。

以下の英文はある辞書に載っていた文章です。訳は『通販で買ったフォットネス商品は、一度使ってそれっきりという運命である』と言った感じになるかと思います。 これは強調構文でしょうか？いまいち違う気がします・・。that will only ever be used onceのthatはfitting itemsにかかると思うのですが、そうすると文頭のitは何を表しているのでしょうか？ It is the destny of fitting items purchased from mail order catalogues that will only ever be used once.

新聞で見かけた英文です。 後半部分ですが、so～thatの構文で、thatの省略された文で、しかも、＜so parsimonious it goes undermarked＞は＜an aid package＞を後置修飾していると思うのですが、正しいでしょうか？so～thatが単語を修するようなことがあり得るのでしょうか？ "He（小泉首相） took a risk by supporting the United States at the start of the Iraq war," the Foreign Ministry official snapped back.
