1.A dragonfly is a useful insect. aがつくということは、「あるひとつをとって」とか「たくさんあるな中の任意のひとつをとれば」のようなニュアンスになります。トンボは一般的にいろいろな種類があり、どの種類も「有用」な昆虫ですから、この言い方は、ちょっと誤解を招く可能性があります。つまり、「いろいろ居るトンボの中のある種は有用だ」というごかいです。 2.Dragonflies are useful insects. これが一般的に使われる言い方です。トンボはいろいろ居るわけで、それらをごたまぜにして複数で表すわけです。 3.The dragonfly is a useful insect. theがつくのは、他のもの、例えばバッタとか蝶とかとの対立、分類が意識されます。つまり、その文章で、それらのものへの触れていれば、この言い方が普通です。一般に、ちょっと気取った、学問的な、教室で、教員が説明するようなときの言い方です。 4.The dragonflies are useful insects. これは、「そのトンボたち」という意味に普通はなります。つまり、この文章よりも前の部分で触れた、例えば、九州に居るトンボなどの具体的に限定されたものを指します。

Dragonflies are useful insects. の2つの差はあまりないんじゃないでしょうか。ちょっと自信ないけど。どちらもトンボ一般の性質を説明しているように思います。あえて比べれば後者の方がその向きは強いかもしれません。
