これは上の文だと直訳で メンバーの一人が病気になる前には、彼はとても遠くへ行っていなかった。 ⇒メンバーの一人が病気になった時には、まだ遠くへは行っていない ⇒彼はあまり遠くいかないうちに、メンバーの一人が病気になった といった事なのだと思われます。 しかし下の文だと メンバーの一人が病気になった以前に、彼はとても遠くへ行ってしまった。 という文になってしまいます。よって意味が異なってしまうわけです。

英訳を頼まれてやってみたのですが、時制の一致のことで考え込んでしまいました。 どなたか教えていただけたら嬉しいです。 内容ですが・・・ 「彼がゆきちゃんを愛していることや、とても心優しい人だというのが良くわかりました。」 というのを英訳してみました。 I felt that he loved Yuki very much and he had a gentle heart. 時制の一致で、後ろの動詞も過去形にしてみたのですすが、「愛している」と「心優しい人だ」というのは現在のことでもあるので、現在完了で書いたほうがいいのでしょうか？ その場合 (1)I felt that he has loved Yuki very much and he has had a gentle heart. (2)I felt that he had loved Yuki very much and he had had a gentle heart. (1)と(2)のどちらが正しいのでしょうか？ よろしくお願い致します。

He found the watch which he had lose the day before. 参考書からの引用です。 この文はthe day beforeという副詞句がloseを修飾していて、過去完了を使わずとも時制のズレが確認出来ると思うのですが、参考書の解答にはこの形の文章のみ正解とされていました。 何故このように過去完了形を用いるのでしょうか？過去形では間違いなのですか？ 他にも、 I had not gone a mile before I felt tired. 私は1マイルも行かないうちに疲れを感じた。 これもbeforeという接続詞が副詞節を作りgoを修飾しているのと思うのですが、何故過去完了形を用い、過去形を使ってはいけないのでしょうか？

John Galsworthyという作家の『ＴHE CHOICE』という物語の英文を訳しました。 添削と、わからない個所を教えてください。 It had declined him for years, but, even before a long illness ousted him in favour of younger men, he had felt very severely the palpable difference in things. それは年来彼を傾けました。しかし長い病気のせいで、彼がより若い男性（後輩）に（仕事を？）追い出される前にすら、彼は物ごとの明白な違いを大変ひどく感じていました。 冒頭のＩtが何を指しているのかわかりません。 内容からa long illness のような気がするのですが、 It had declined him for years, but, even before a long illness ousted him と Itの後にa long illnessが出てくるので、わからない感じです。 前述の英文は But he was a great sufferer from a variety of ailments. He had gout, and some trouble in his side, and feet that were like barometers in their susceptibility to weather. Of all these matters he would speak to us in a very impersonal and uncomplaining way, diagnosing himself, as it were, for the benefit of his listeners.
