a sea????
Primitive one-celled life floating in a sea would naturally assume a spherical home.とあったのですが、ここでは何故seaの冠詞がaなのでしょうか？？？？aはなんらかのまとまりがある始めと終わりのあるものにつくと認識しているのですが、この認識は間違っているのでしょうか？？？？

通常seaにはtheが付き、go to the sea のように使います。このtheはどこかの海を特定するより、話し手や聞き手にとってすでに特定されている今そこにある海というような感じです。この文では a sea となっていますが、今そこにあるのではない大昔の「ある海」という感じを出しているようです。または「一つの水体」という意味かもしれません。これをthe seaとしても必ずしも間違いではないと思います。形は変わっても地球上の海には変わりないとも言えます。 ＞aはなんらかのまとまりがある始めと終わりのあるものにつく この認識でいいでしょう。「水」そのものには始まりも終わりもありませんが、「海」は範囲があります。地球上の海は全てつながっていると考えれば、地球がその範囲になり、「日本海」「太平洋」のような場合は必ずしもはっきりしなくても境界線があるはずです。

この場合、海であればどこでもいいわけです。 どこでもいい、あるどこかの海に浮いている原始単細胞生物の事を言っているのです。もちろんその１個の細胞だけの事を言っているわけではありません。 敢えて付け加えれば in a sea (of water) というような感じでしょうか。

憶測ですが、もしかして地質時代の原始生物についての記述でしょうか？ だとすれば a sea とすることで、海のようなもの という感じを出しているのかもしれません。 つまり現在の海 the sea とは規模や深さ・成分が多分かなり違っているのではないか、という認識から、意図的に a sea としたのでは。 ＞aはなんらかのまとまりがある”始めと終わりのあるもの”につくと認識しているのですが、この認識は間違っているのでしょうか この質問者の感覚はいまひとつ良く理解できないのですが、必ずしもはっきりとした形態をもっていないものでも、認識として数えられるなら 不定冠詞でも良いです。ただ、例文の場合はそういった形態上の認識ではないのかもしれません。
