英語の訳

An interesting observation is that, to a first approximation, the stoichiometry of these two oxides agrees with that of MeO2. これらの二つの酸化物の化学量論がMeO2の化学量論と一致することはおもしろい。みたいな訳だと思うのですが、挿入句の部分でなにを言っているのか分かりません。first approximationは’第一近似’という日本語訳があると思うのですが。。。 Their chemical compositions are different, with iron being the main element of the outer layer and chromium of the inner one. この文は、二つの層が存在していて、一方の層の主な元素は鉄で、もう一方の層はクロムだと言っていると思うのですが、with iron being the main element of the outer layer　の部分で、with や being がどのような意味で使われているのか分からなくて役にいまいち自信がありません。 分かる方がいらしたらお願いします。

1つ目の　to a first approximation については、具体的にどのような近似法（シミュレーションなどで利用される）を使っているのかは前後の文からのみ判断されますが、基本的に”第一近似”つまり、始めに行う概略近似　ということでよいと思います。 ただし、前後の文に近似法などについて書かれておらず、突然使われているならば、単純に”大体のところ、大雑把に見れば”のような意味になる可能性もあります。 ２つ目の　with iron being the main element of the outer layer　ですが with のあとのフレーズが　２つの物質がどう化学的に違うかを詳しく説明するための with です。being は with に導かれるフレーズの中にある動詞のために　the iron is --- となるところが、名詞的に being となっているのですね。 日常会話の例では　I went out with my laptop under my arm. ノートパソコンを小脇に抱えて家を出た。 他の表現を使えば、Their chemical compositions are different in (a sense) that iron is the main element of the outer layer and chromium is the main element of the inner layer. 訳は　外側の層の主要元素が鉄で、内側の主要元素がクロムというように（２つの層の）化学組成が違っている。　となるでしょう。

化学のことは詳しくはありませんが、第2文のほうの構造をもう少し説明すると with以下はその前の主文で述べていることの付帯的・付随的な状況を表現していると思います。 He came in with his eyes closed.などと同じような使い方だと思います。 この場合は二種類の異なる化学組成であるというのは具体的には以下のとおりのことです。というような感じでloveme2さんの訳で正しいと思います。 この文は以下のように分離できると思いますが、最初のほうの文がこの論文全体の主流となっているために2番目の文をwithでつないで付加的な説明にしているのだと思います。 Their chemical compositions are different. Iron is the main element of the outer layer and chromium is the main element of the inner layer. withでつなぐために名詞句的にする必要があることからisをbeingに変えて繰り返しを避けるために2番目の文のなかの2番目の（is the main element）を省略し、更にlayerをoneに置き換えています。

化学を専門に研究していますが、化学の立場から訳してみますと、 面白い観察というのは、第一近似としては、これらの二つの酸化物の化学量論はMeO2のそれと一致する。となり、訳された文で良いと思います。第一近似というのは、だいたいのところ、ということですね。 また、２番目のは これらの化学的成分は、鉄が外側の層の主要な元素であり、クロムが内側の層のそれであるということが違っている。となりますね。 文法的な説明は、前の方の回答のように、withは状況を表していますし、beingはironにかかっていると思います。
