穴埋め問題について

People carry passports to show (who) they are and (what) country they are from. なぜこれらの括弧にwhoやwhatが入るんでしょうか? 皆目検討もつきませんでした。。。

People carry passports to show (who) they are and (what) country they are from. * (who) they are ... 彼ら(ここでは最初の主語のPeopleを指します)が(誰)であるか * (what) country they are from ... 彼らが(どの)国の出身であるか 以上のことを示す(証明する)ために、人々はパスポートを(国外に出る際には)持って行く、というのが全体の意味ですね。

失礼ながこの文章がどんな意味を持っているかお分かりでしょうか? それさえ正確に理解されてまた英語ではどういう風に表現するのか 理解されて居られるのならば、あなたのような疑問が出てくる余地はないと思いますよ。要するに、もっと根本的に英語を勉強し直す必要があると思われますが。 Who are they? What country are they from? これらの二つの疑問文が People carry passports to show,,, と言う文章の目的語となります。いわゆる 従属文と呼ばれます。従属文中では動詞の位置が平常文と同じ位置に置かれます。

パスポートを ・彼らが何者であるか (who they are) ・どの国の人か (what country they are from) を見せるために持っているので、こうなります。 これも、bejitaさんの昨日の質問 http://oshiete1.goo.ne.jp/kotaeru.php3?q=1826332 と同様の用法です。

パスポートの用途を考えればそれが一番妥当だから、です。 文全体が何を言おうとしているかはおわかりでしょうか? あるいは、カッコ内の単語として何か別のものを想定されましたでしょうか?
