こんにちは。 外国語学習には、理屈を知らなくてもいい場合と 知ると一層理解が深まる場合の両方があると思うのですが 私は各国の「国籍の呼び方の違いの理屈」を知りたいと思い、質問を投稿しました。 たとえば日本語では基本的には国名に「人（じん）」をつけます。 日本国籍の人は「日本＋人」で「日本人」と呼ばれ、英語では「Japanese」です。 中国人も「Chinese」ですが アメリカ人は「Americanese」ではなく「American」、 オーストラリア人も「Australianese」ではなく「Australian」、 イタリア人も「Italianese」ではなく「Italian」です。 ひょっとすると最後の音が「a」の国が国籍になると「an」になるのかなと思いましたが イラン人の「Iranian」をみるとそうでもないようです。 では最後の音が「n」であれば「a」と同様に「an」になるのかと思うと レバノン人は「Lebanian」ではなく「Lebanese」です。 Japanも最後が「n」ですが「Japanian」ではありません。 China も最後が「a」ですが「Chinan」ではありません。 「～nese」「～an」だけでなく、 スペイン人の「Spanish」、ニュージーランド人の「New Zealander」等々、 挙げたらきりがないのですが、もしどなたかその理屈を言語学的にご存じでしたら ご教授いただけませんでしょうか。 よろしくお願いします。

米大統領選に関するニュースを聞いていたときに前クリントン大統領支持者のことを「Clintonian」と呼んでいました。英語で、「～の人」「～支持者」と言うときにはいろいろな語尾がつきますが、何か一定のルールはあるのでしょうか。 例をだすと。AmeriaやCanadaはNをつけてAmerican、Canadian。JapanやChinaはEseでJapaneseやChinese。 とどのつまり、なせClintoneseでなくてClintonianなんだろうと思ったのです。 宜しくお願いします。
