a telegram written that … だと、a telegram which is[was] written that …となり、a telegram is written that …が成り立たなくてはなりません。能動態にすると、write a telegram that …となり、誤りとなります。sayingだと、a telegram which says that …と同じ意味で正しいです。Sayingという現在分詞は関係代名詞を用いて書き換えたとき、必ずしも進行形になりません。

readとwriteの意味の問題とか、時制の問題は無関係です。 #3の方がおっしゃっているように、これは現在分詞にするか過去分詞にするかという問題です。能動的につながるのなら現在分詞、受動態の関係になるのなら過去分詞です。過去分詞が単独で出てきた時には完了の意味にはなりませんし、もちろん過去の意味もありません。 日本語では「電報は～と書かれていた」と言えますが、英語でwriteをそのような受け身の文で使うことはできません。 The telegram was written that～.という文が成り立つためには、 They wrote the telegram that～.のような文が成り立たなくてはならない、というのも#3の方のおっしゃるとおりです。writeにはこのような構文はありません。 同じような例ですが、日本人はよく The Japanese are said that they are hard-working. のような間違った受け身を作ります。日本語では「日本人は勤勉だと言われている」と言えますが、 They say the Japanese that they are hard-working. と言えないので、上の受け身も不可能です。

“written”is the past tense, but “saying”is the present. Somebody had written, and it's saying ---. と言ってました。って聞けば、分かった気がしません？あらっ、なんかわからなくてなってきた。「the passive voice」の解釈は考えないのかな。。でも、いや、考えるとおかしいわ、日本語でそのまま考えれば「僕は父が危篤であるということが書かれた電報を受け取った」ですよね。でも、この変なモヤモヤ感、＃３の方が書いてくれています。

あ、ほんとだ。読み間違えてました。ごめんなさい。 今、後ろの席のイングランド人に聞いてみました。 時制の問題らしいです。電報だけで考えると、電報は書かれるものだからwrittenで良いような気がしますが、電報を受け取った→それは「父危篤」ということを伝えるもの。誰かが書いたものを、受け取った、で、こうこうこうだということを伝えている。という解釈でどうでしょう？上手く言えません。

後ろの人に聞いてくれたんですか？感激です。 その人は時制の問題だと説明してくれた時にどう言いましたか？ ぜひ教えてください。 また、この場合の時制の問題について もう少々詳しく説明してください。

映画のセリフなどで 看板とか、チラシとか、新聞記事などを指して “It says…”と言う表現をしていたような記憶があります 電報はそれに近い感じになるのでは？ 手紙だったらwrittenでしょうけどね

手紙も電報も違いはないように思えるのですが。

電報だからじゃないでしょうか。紙だから。紙に書かれていたから。

紙に書かれているという意味なら written になりませんか？
