dotは能動態ではdot A with Bの形で「Bの中にAを点在させる」という意味です。 受動態で使えばA is dotted with Bで「AがBの中に点在する」ということになります。 文章は分詞構文ですから （The ghosts are）Dotted here and there among the students, the ghosts shone misty silver.として、 「ゴーストは生徒の間のあちこちに点在し妖しい銀色に輝いていた」 となります。

コンマとコロンだらけで全然読解できません・・・。 アドバイスください。 I want that dog,I want to pet and hug him,or there is interesting object:you should look at it too,or I'm scared,hold me and get away from here. という一文なのですが、まったくわかりません。この英文は何を言っているのでしょうか？ コロンを挟んでの2つの文が呼応しているというのはなんとなく思うのですが、何せ訳しても意味がめちゃくちゃです・・・。 最初のコンマに挟まれて2つの完全な文があるのもおかしいような気がします・・・。コンマで2つの完全な文はつなげないのではありませんか？ 自分なりに訳しましたが、こんな感じです・・・。 私はペットを飼い、抱きしめたい。私はあの犬が欲しい。もしくは興味深いものがあるのだ。要するに、あなたはそれをも見なければならない。もしくは、私はおびえ、私を捕まえ、ここから逃げ出す。 う～～ん、これは迷訳ですね・・・。 英語はすごく苦手です。 お手柔らかにお願いいたします(T-T)

英語の勉強を兼ねてノルウェーの森の英語翻訳版(Norwegian Wood by Haruki Murakami)を読んでいます。意味は分かるのですが、学生時代に勉強を怠ったので（苦笑）所々つまずく箇所があります。今後、英語で文章を書くために自分の弱い部分を強化したいと思っています。以下に抜粋した7つの質問で文法上の法則（質問(3)は除いて）を理解したいと思いますので、英語に強い方がいましたら簡単にお答えいただけますでしょうか。特にコンマで区切られ文、分詞構文などのルールがいまいち理解できておりません。どうぞよろしくお願い致します。 (1) They took the table near the door, spent some time looking over the menu and discussing their options, until one of them reported their choices to the waitress. こんばんは。回答ありがとうございます。 >dot A with Bの形で「Bの中にAを点在させる」 dotには「させる」って感じの単語だったのですね。そ のれの受身なので「させられる」となって「点在して いる」となるわけですね。しかし「中で」をwithを使 っているけど、質問の文ではamongをを使っています。 この違いがよくわかりませんでした。
