前置詞と群前置詞の見極め方について聞かせてください。
I stood in front of the teacher's desk.
という文章がありました。
この文を訳そうとしたとき私は、
I /stood/ in front /of the teacher's desk.
私は/立った/前に/先生の所有するデスク
と解釈して「私は先生の机の前に立った」と訳しました。
しかし、後から「in front of～ 」で「…の前に」という群前置詞だと知りました。
例えばI didn't go out because of the rain.
のような文ですと「because」を前置詞だと仮定して読み進めていくと、ofが名詞(名詞に相当する語句)ではないので、「これは群前置詞？？」と疑って調べることができます。
ですが、今回の 「in front of～」のような群前置詞の場合、「in」を前置詞と仮定して読み進めていくと、「front」は「前」という意味を持つ名詞なので「in front」という区切りで見てしまいます。
英語は単語そのものではなく、組み合わせによって意味が変化してしまうところがあると思っているので、なるべく塊（と言ったらいいのでしょうか？）で調べるようにしています。
今回はたまたま訳せましたが、「in front of」のように、塊を見極められない時が困ってしまします。
(他にもat the risk of…など)
だからと言って、この世の前置詞群をすべて暗記するわけにもいきませんし・・・。
初めて読む英文で前置詞か群前置詞かわかりづらい場面に遭遇したとき、どのようにして塊を見極めていらっしゃいますか？

Who moved my cheese?を読んでいると下記のような文章がありました。

本の内容を知らない人には分かりにくいかもしれませんが、、、
要するに、チーズがどこかに消えてしまい、登場人物が怒っているという場面の文章です。
でも、日本人の私からすると、手を腰に当てるという動作は、
“牛乳を飲むとき”や、“ちょっと立ち止まって休むとき” などにするありふれた動作だと思うのです。
だから、怒っているときに“手を腰にあてる”という表現がしっくりこないのですが、
英語を母語とする人にとっては、“怒っている時”や“何かに呆れた時”にする自然な動作なのでしょうか？
分かる方がいらっしゃいましたら教えてください。

この後半部の意味についてお尋ねします。

教材に付属する「解答・解説書」にはやや異なる２つの和訳が並存しています。
＜和訳１＞（古いカミソリに）新しい刃が出てきたように思えた。（「全文訳」より）
＜和訳２＞（古いカミソリが）新しい刃を生やすように思えた。（「解説」より）
和訳１では、新しい刃が「…が出てきた」、つまり、新しい刃の出現という出来事の完了を確認した、というニュアンスを感じます。
一方、和訳２は「…を生やす」ですので、カミソリをピラッミド（模型）内に置くと、(そのたびごとに、常に)新しい刃が出てくる、というイメージを持ちます。つまり、カミソリをピラッミド（模型）内に置くという条件を満たすと常に新しい刃が出現するという事態を一般的・恒常的真理として認識した、というニュアンスを私は感じます。

辞書を見るとおおよそ次のような記述があります。
seem toの後は通例
（あ）think、knowなど状態を表す動詞」が来る、
（い）「動作を表す動詞の場合は、進行形・完了形にする」
（例えば、『ジーニアス英和辞典』第４版）。
とすると、件の英文には「通例」の解釈はあてはまらないということでしょうか。

私の疑問は、次の２つです。
(1)そもそも件の英文 ”it seemed to grow…” は、多くの辞書の記述には合致していないように思いますが、どのように考えればいいのでしょうか。
(2)もし仮に英文がこのままで正しい英語だとすると、「和訳１」と「和訳２」ではどちらが正しいのでしょうか？それとも第３の和訳を考えるべきですか？

Her eyes were wild and her clothes torn when she rushed into the station.
“That girl is out of her mind!”someone said.
“The express!”shouted Kate. “Stop the express!”

hear the express approaching. He picked up a red light and ran outside.

Men came running, lengths of rope in their hands , and climbed on the engine. Kate went with them across the trestle, which fortunately still held, and down to Honey Creek Bridge.
Kate stepped out on the trestle to see if it would hold her. Though she could feel it shake beneath her, it did not go down. Then, the wind blew out her light. The night was black. She began to crawl, feeling ahead of her to see if the bridge was still there. From one board to the next she went cautiously on. Sometimes she would slip and almost fall into the roaring water below. Then she would regain her hold and go on.
Kate did not know what time it was. The express would come through at twelve. What if she vas still on the bridge when it came? She would be killed. But there was no way back now.
Part of the way across, she saw a big tree rushing down the river. It had been torn out of the ground by the flood, and dirt still hung on its roots. It was approaching fast. It is sure to push the bridge down, she thought. And I can't stop it. Her heart beat quickly. Then the tree passed under the bridge, clearing the trestle by only a foot.
Kate kept crawling. Nails and splinters caught at her clothes. Her hands were torn. Thinking of the express and all its passengers, she made one last effort and finally reached the end of the bridge.
