ここのfromはどういう意味ですか？
the only remains of apples that archaelogists have found from this period are from fruits the same size as the wild apples native to the region. ここのfrom fruitsのfromなのですがどちらかというとfromはなくてもいいような気がするのですが。（もしくはthe fruitsとtheで特定する）

この from は起源、出身を表します。 「～から来た、生まれた」 remains なだけに、fruits そのものというより、 それをもととして、そこから一部が残った。 fruits の後は、the same size ... が形容詞的に後置修飾する形ですが、 ただ、そのサイズの fruits というだけで、 fruits 自体には限定の the はついていません。

fromはある集団を元としてそこから発生したと言う意味で、出身、出自を表しています。 the remains of apples は、fruits と全く同じでは無く、ある特定の（ここではthe same size as the wild apples native to the region) fruitsの種類（母集団）の中に含まれます。 fromは取ってしまうとthe remains of apples ＝ fruits になってしまい、少し意味が変わります。 the only remains of apples をどう訳しかによって、訳す時のイメージが変わるかも知れません。 私は、ここのthe remains of apples を、”林檎の化石”ととらえました。化石って呼んで良いかわかりませんが、古代に育っていたもので、遺跡に残されていたもの(from this period)。 じゃあそれが、現在生育している物と比較してみたらどうなるか。 同じ地域には何種類か野生の林檎があるけれど、それと同じ大きさの果物が何種類かあって、古代の林檎の化石と比較すると、その果物の中に何種類か合致するものがあった。 と言うことで、fruitsが母集団になっていて、the only remains of apples は母集団の中の一部と一致していると言うことだと思います。
