Now let me lay this out for you ignorant—bastards. You at the window, you’re so god-damned smart. We’re facing a danger here. Don’t you know it? These people are multiplying. That kid on trial, his type, they’re multiplying five times as fast as we are. That’s the statistic. Five times. And they are – wild animals. They’re against us, they hate us, and they want to destroy us. That’s right. Don’t look at me like that! There’s a danger. For God’s sake we’re living in a dangerous time, and if we don’t watch it, if we don’t smack them down whenever we can, then they are gonna own us. They’re gonna breed us out of existence.”

Whether they’re aware of it or not, all people keep a running account of what’s happening to them, what it means, and what they should do. In other words, our minds are constantly monitoring and interpreting. That’s just how we stay on track. But sometimes the interpretation process goes awry. Some people put more extreme interpretations on things that happen—and then react with exaggerated feelings of anxiety, depression, or anger. Or superiority. Mindsets frame the running account that’s taking place in people’s heads. They guide the whole interpretation process. The fixed mindset creates an internal monologue that is focused on judging: “This means I’m a loser.” “This means I’m a better person than they are.” “This means I’m a bad husband.” “This means my partner is selfish.” People with a growth mindset are also constantly monitoring what’s going on, but their internal monologue is not about judging themselves and others in this way. Certainly they’re sensitive to positive and negative information, but they’re attuned to its implications for learning and constructive action: What can I learn from this? How can I improve? How can I help my partner do this better? Chapter 8 is about changing the internal monologue from a judging one to a growth-oriented one. It shows how mindset change has enabled people to pursue their goals more effectively and it shows how a mindset workshop boosted students’ motivation and grades.

Some microbes live in places which we do not think can support life, and they usually get their energy in ways that we could never imagine are possible. 上の文ですが、 文法解析すると、 which(=places)( we do not think) can support life 場所が生命を支えるのを可能にする that(=ways) (we could never imagine) are possible 方法は可能である それぞれ先行詞を関係詞に代入すると上のようになりますが、 おかしな訳になります。

"You're not permitted to ener a mosque without removing your footwear,be they shoes, sandals, or slippers " という文なのですが、 be they shoes, sandals, or slippers と言う箇所は、仮定法現在の倒置、あるいは譲歩構文で(文法用語は間違っているかもしれません。) whether they are shoes, sandals, or slippers という文にパラフレーズできることは分かるのですが、 これだと従属節の主語がtheyで主節の主語がyouになっています。

QNo.6571763 の続きです. (a) Once upon a time . . . People think that humans are the smartest of animals, and most people do not think about other animals as being smart, or at least think that they are not as smart as humans. Knowing that other animals are as smart as us means we can appreciate them more, which could also help us to help them. Scientists do experiments on monkeys, because they are similar to man, but bees could actually be close to man too. We see bees in the natural habitat doing what they do, but you do not really see them doing human things—such as solving human puzzles like Sudoku. So it makes you wonder if they could solve a human puzzle. If they could solve it, it would mean that they are really smart, smarter than we thought before, which would mean that humans might have some link with bees. If bees are like us in some way, then understanding them could help us understand ourselves better. (a)昔々…

Which is why a popular trick from dieting might be helpful. Some diets allow a "cheat day"-one day per week in which dieters can eat anything and everything they want.Indeed, they're encouraged to write a list during the week of all the foods they craved so they can enjoy them all at once as a treat(the thinking being that if you're eating healthy six out of seven days, you're still ahead). the thinking being thatとありますが、 the thinking の後にbeing が入ってthat が後に続いていることをどのように解釈すれば良いのかわからないです。

For predators faced with less noisy prey, there are still some things that can be done to help the hunter encounter a meal. Some oceanic "flashlight" fish posses a bio-luminescent light organ just under each eye, which they can "switch" on and off voluntarily. These animals hunt in darkness at night or at great depths;they activate their light organ to produce enough illumination to spot their prey, which would otherwise be invisible.
