すべてのF-1ビザを持っている学生は、OPT中かOPT申し込み中かにかかわらず、I-94 にD/Sと記載されていなければならない。 しかしながら、学校に戻るか、STEM Extensionを使うのであれば当該学生の滞在ステイタスはF-1の継続期間となる。OPT終了の少なくとも2,3ヶ月前にはSTEM Extension（その資格があるならば）の申し込みをする必要がある。
