Is the Rewritten Sentence Natural in English? Confusion Regarding the Second Response
- Jack asked Andrew about the bus leaving at what time and Andrew replied that it was two o'clock.
- Jack asked Andrew as to (or at) what time did the bus leave and Andrew replied that it was two o'clock.
- Is the rewritten sentence grammatically correct? I can understand the first sentence, but the second response is mysterious.

ごめんなさい、もう一つ追加で説明です 前回の回答で when the bus left → when the bus had left として、(別に直さなくてもいいのだけど)と書いております でも読みなおしたら、「バスが出発[した時]、アンドリューに尋ねた」とも読めてしまうので 文法的なことは考えないとしても when the bus had leftとした方がいいです(というか、するべきです) 時制を別にすることで、「[した時]」というような一連の流れを区切る効果があります 一瞬でも、「あれ、目的語はどれ?」とか思わせるような文はよくないですね

すみません， 直接話法で＞"What time did the bus leave?" だったので leaves という現在形はあり得ないです。 学校文法通りなら what time the bus had left と過去完了。 実際には what time the bus left という過去形でも問題ないです。 試験問題なら過去完了 had left のみが正解。

あと，一応，ルール上，時制の一致で過去形 left にしましたが， 反復的な時刻表を尋ねる場面で， asked, replied がストーリー上の過去でなく， 今この文を書いている時間と同じシーンであれば現在形 leaves も用いられます。

ルール的には Jack asked (Andrew) what time the bus left. ask は ask 人 wh- あるいは ask wh- というふうに，いわゆる間接疑問文を目的語にとります。 だから，疑問詞を使いながら肯定文の語順にして， そのまま ask の目的語にすればいいです。 後半は学校文法で習うルールとしては間接話法にできません。 だから，お示しのように何かを補って Andrew replied it left at two o'clock. などとすればいいです。 ルールばかりにしばられるのもよくありませんが， 基本的な書き換えパターンを復習した方がいいと思います。 特に間接疑問文は大切です。
