次の文は、勝ちをもたらせたヒットを打った打者に記者が質問した文です。 You had a lot of bullpen guys pick you up and have a big inning, come in, change momentum of the game; how big was that, and having a chance to make something happen on offense? bullpen guysはブルペンに控えるピッチャーだとすると。pick you upしたのはだれで、have a big inning,をしたのは誰で、誰がcome in, して誰が change momentum of the gameをしたのでしょうか。 普通に考えれば、pick you up以外はyouだと思われますが、そうなると、 pick you upとはどういう意味になるのでしょうか。 口語なので、いろいろ略されているのでしょうか。 guysの後にpick you upというのも 文法的にどうなのでしょうか。解説お願いいたします。

無茶苦茶意訳すると、たぶん、こんなこと。 中継ぎ・押えの投手に助けられたことも多いですよね？大量得点されたところに登場してゲームの流れを変えてしまうとか。そういうことって、どのくらい大きなことなんでしょうか？（中継ぎ・押え投手の好投が)チームの打撃を爆発させるきっかけになったりすることがありますか？ 「have + 人 + 動詞の原形」で「人に～してもらう」の意味になります。 だから、その後の一連の動作の主体は全てbullpen guys had a lot of bullpen guys ～は「大勢のbullpen guysに～してもらった」 bullpen guysは「中継ぎ・押えの投手」のことでしょう。 同じインタビューの後の発言で we have got a great starting rotation and a great bullpenと言っていますが starting rotation = 先発組 bullpen = 中継ぎ・押え ということだと思います。 pick you upは、あなたたち（＝チームのみんな)を（トラブル・ピンチのなかから拾い上げる」のイメージ。 big inningは、大量得点（4点以上)が入ったイニングのことを言うようです。 having a chance to make something happen on offense?は、 「攻撃面で何かを引き起こす可能性がある？」でしょうか、その心は最初に訳したようなことだと思います。

ビッグイニングは、守備側（投手の側）からすると、「大量失点」ということだと思います。 ぐぐってみても、そういう意味でbig inningを使った例はそれほどたくさんは見つからないので（皆無ではありませんが）、すごく自信があるわけではありませんが、他に解釈しようがないと思います。 ひとつのポイントは、 (2) have a big inning ＝ ビッグイニング (3) come in ＝ 選手登場 (4) change momentum of the game ＝ ゲームの流れを一変 という順番になっていること。 これが、選手登場→ビッグイニング→ゲームの流れを一変…の順番なら、代打でタイムリーを打った選手のことを言っていると考えるところですが、ご質問の文章では、ビッグイニングは選手登場の前のこととして言及されているように見えます。 だとすれば、やはり、ヒーローが登場してすべてをひっくり返す前の、悪役に味方がボコボコにやられる場面の描写と考える方が自然だと思います。

こんにちは。 『はじめに』 話題が殊勲打を打って勝利に導いた打者（ニュアンスから見て代打）へのヒーローインタビューとして回答を考えて見ました。 『文章の意味』 数多くの控え選手の中からあなたが選ばれ、殊勲打で大量得点イニングを現出し、ゲームの流れを大きく変えました。 それよりも何よりも、これまで押さえ込まれて味方打線に何かを起こせるんだと言う雰囲気を作ってくれましたね。 『解説』 ブルペンとは控え投手陣を指しています。 しかし、ヒーローインタビューは代打でヒットを打ち、ゲームの流れを変えた選手になされたもので、控え投手とは一応無関係だと考えます。 そこで『bullpen guys』をベンチにいた控え選手たちと意訳してみました。 野球関係者は英語の専門家ではありません。 喋る英語も文法なんてまるで無関係という人が少なくありません。 彼らは英語のネィティブだと必要以上に尊敬することはありません。 要は意味が通じれば良いのです。 文法だけなら日本人の方が先生ですよ。 アメリカ人だからと畏れ過ぎないことです。

ご回答ありがとうございます。 要は意味が通じればいいというのは、本当にそう思います。 このインタビューの場合おっしゃる通り、 代打ではありませんが、打撃で活躍した打者へのインタビューです。ただし、彼の回答が次の様になっているため、bullpen guysはやはり投手だと思われます。 また、Wikipediaの野球用語のところに、pick me upが When one player makes a mistake or fails to do something he tried to do, he may ask another, "Pick me up." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glossary_of_baseball#P と説明されているので、これもミスした選手をカバーするみたいな意味だと思われます。 回答： I think the secret formula this year has been pitching for us. Not many people have probably watched too many Nationals games, but we have got a great starting rotation and a great bullpen. We have relied on them all year long. They keep us in the ballgame and some timely hits from this kid and the rest of the guys coming off the bench. That's really been the formula, just some timely hitting and some really, really good pitching.
