STP fired Weiland in February after reuniting with him in 2010 for a series of tours and one self-titled album. The band had previously been on hiatus since 2002, primarily due to the singer's struggles with drugs and alcohol. In an open letter on the band's web site, STP told fans that the purpose of their lawsuit was "not to hurt Scott. We want to move forward productively, and Scott's choices and actions have prevented us from doing that."

STP released all six of their albums from 1992 to 2010 on Atlantic Records. The band were involved in a lawsuit with Atlantic in 2008 when the label sued former frontman Scott Weiland and drummer Eric Kretz for attempting to get out of their contract so STP could self-release their new music. The DeLeo brothers had been let out of their contract for Army of Anyone. STP and Atlantic worked out their issues and STP's 2010 self-titled comeback album was released on Atlantic.

Which begs the question ... why is Scott so sure he's not out of the band? He says it's because there's a clause in the band's contract that forbids the members from using the name STP on another group. In other words, if Scott's out ... STP ceases to exist. Ultimately, Weiland says he has no idea what the other guys were thinking -- but when asked if he's still leading the band, he replied smugly, "I started it."

An official statement may or may not be released later today by Weiland's camp. I am still trying to find out about what the actual state of STP is. We won't really know until they collectively release a statement. STP last performed two and a half months ago in Sacramento, California and are “on a break” according to Scott Weiland. The band have been unwilling to commit to recording a new album. The DeLeo brothers and Eric Kretz have yet to comment on the story.

Former STP frontman Scott Weiland just recently embarked on the second leg of his “Purple at the Core” tour with his solo band, The Wildabouts. He recently had the chance to chat with Alan Sculley of HamptonRoads to reminiscence on STP's early days and provide a hint at what's to come for his solo career. When inquired about the band's disparate recording of their 2010 reunion album, Weiland said “No, we weren't hanging out much.” He noted that life in the band changed after the release of “Purple” in 1994. “That's kind of when it stopped. We were all chummy and all that up until then.”
