英会話での訳が判らず困っています
- ニュースで英会話でのセンテンスなのですが、「like a man with something to prove.」の訳が分からず困っています。
- エストニア人の大関・把瑠都は金曜日にすでに優勝を決めましたが、千秋楽には何か意気込みを感じさせて登場しました。対戦相手も同様でした。
- このような表現についてはイディオムとして覚えるしかないのでしょうか？

"something to prove" はよく使われるイディオムです。 "something"は「何かを」、"to prove"は「証明するために」ですから、私だったこの場合、 「何か意気込みを感じさせて登場した」ではなく、 「まるで自分の実力を証明するためが如く、登場した」 としますかね。

like a man with something to prove. を本来の意味を損ねないように訳すと、 「何かまだ他に認めさせたいものがあるかのような意気込みで登場しました」 になります。すでに最高優勝を決めているので、ここでは、それでも横綱に勝って 最強であることを認めてもらいたい、あるいは、横綱にも勝てるんだということを 認めてもらいたい、そういうのが "something" として暗に示されているわけです。 「何か意気込みを」だけではこのニュアンスは出ませんね。

この場合の with something to prove は、to prove oneself as something という表現と同じようなものだと思われます。つまり、「自分はこれだけの力量を持っているのだ、ということを見せつける」 「自分の能力を発揮してみせる」 という意味合いです。 その最終戦では彼は勝てないのじゃないか、という見方があることに発奮して、「おれをみくびるな。やってやろうじゃないか」 という思いを抱いていたということを表しているので、それを 「意気込みを感じさせて」 という訳として反映させたのでしょう。 私にはそれよりも、sew up the championship （優勝を手中におさめる） という表現が新鮮に感じられました。

A sport, you guys! Did you see that part where the ball went on the good man's foot and bounced RIGHT OFF INTO A NET!
