今回は，利益と損失の量を比較しているのであって， 利益と損失が正反対のものだというのは関係ありません。 「利益」と「損失」という言葉を子供に説明するような場面でもなければ 「利益」と「損失」は言葉の意味において正反対というのは自明のことで， そういうことをわざわざこの英文で言っているわけではありません。 すなわち，ここでの比較は「損失」「利益」の意味は自明として， Mizuho booked a group net loss of ￥588.8 billion in business 2008 due to the deteriorating economy and financial market turmoil. と，まず2008年度の損失5888億円とあって， この損失（5888億円）は，2007年度の利益3112億円と比べられる（比べてのものである）。 本来なら，favorably のような副詞をつけて「比べて勝っている」とします。 compare with で be similar to とあるのは， 日本語で「匹敵する」，否定で「比ぶべくもない」などという通り， don't compare with で「同じではない，劣っている」を表すのが普通です。 （あるいは unfavorly/poorly compare with とする） 今回は，年度が違うし，単なる数字の比較にすぎず，勝るも劣るもない ということでしょうか。
