とりあえず該当しそうな語を取り出してみます。 > その本 the book はあまりに too/so ... that 退屈 boring/bored > 彼も he, too 読みたい want to read とは思いませんでした didn't 得られた材料を使って、それらしい文を組み立ててみます （この段階では不完全な文でもOK）。 The book too boring, he didn't want to read 改めて与えられている材料を眺めてみる。so があるってことは、ひょっとしたら so ... that （あまりに・・・なので・・・） という形の文になるのではなかろうか、と思う。そういう文にしてみると、 The book was so boring that he didn't want to read. 何となくいい感じがする。だけど、read という動詞の後ろには、「・・・を読む」 の 「・・・」 が必要なのでは？ The book was so boring that he didn't want to read it. これで良さそうな気がするけど、「不要な語」 が３つになってしまう。もう1個何か使うはずだ。 「彼も読みたいとは」 の 「彼も」 だ。either を使うべし！ The book was so boring that he didn't want to read it either. either の位置はここでいいんだろうかと迷ったりするけど、一応は形になってるから、仮に間違ってても何点かはもらえるはず。合ってるのなら、言うことなしだし。 な～んて考えながら、そういう答えになりました。

こんにちは。 Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix [UK, adult版] p.223 11章の第一文に関してです。 Harry did not want to tell the others that he and Luna were having the same hallucination, if that was what it was, so he said nothing more about the horses as he sat down inside the carriage and slammed the door behind him. ハリーはルーナが自分と同じ幻覚（馬車を引く馬で他の学生には見えないがハリーとルーナには見える）をみたことを誰にもいいたくありません。そのことを書いている英文です。 この文で「if that was what it was」はどのように英文解釈すればよいのでしょうか？ 日本語では「幻覚だったかもしれない…」となっていますがなぜこのような日本語になるのでしょうか？ 「what it is」は「それが何であるか、それが何か」というような意味になるかと思うのですが、それと同じように解釈すると、今度は「if that was」とつながりにくくなります。 どのように解釈すればよいのでしょうか？ 教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。

少し長くなりますが，前文がないと意味の取りようがないと思いますので，タイプします．次に挙げる文の前に，主人公は図書館に入って，余り興味を感じないギリシャ史の本を読もうとしていたが，そのうちうとうととしだしたと言う意味合いの記述が数行に渡ってあります． When I opened my eyes there was an old man sitting there opposite me. I hadn't heard him come in and I must have looked surprised at seeing him there, because he smiled and asked if it was all right for him to sit there. He was silent for a few minutes and then he began to talk. His long thin finger pointed to the book in front of me and he said that it was interesting. Of course I didn't argue with him, even though, I didn't really agree. But it soon became clear to me that he knew a lot about Greek history, for he started to tell me things that were in that book as if he'd written it himself. [ He made it sound as if those long-dead Greeks were part of today's world.] [ ] の前までの内容は分かるのですが，[ ]の部分がどういう状況を言っているのかよく分かりません．まったく自信はないのですが，礼儀として，私のあてすっぽの解釈を申し上げます． 「彼はそれら死んで久しくなるあのギリシャ人たちが，まるでこの世の一部分であるかのように…？」 it の内容とsound の訳し方が分かりません．辞書では一応当たってみましたが．また，long-dead Greeks の意味も自身はありません．全体的にはどういう状況を表現しているのでしょう．宜しくお願いします．

下記の文ですが、意味はとれるので問題ないのですが、 文の構造についていくつかの疑問があります。ご教授いただけたらと思います。 （1）It was not until baby was fed that he stopped crying. 本来は、The baby did not stop crying until he was fed だと思います。これだと意味もわかり易いのですが、強調構文になった途端、理解に苦しみます。 ここでのthatは ～なのは、というような役目？ (2) Who was it that read my diary while I was out? it that read のところが解釈に苦しみます。 (3) I don't want there to be any trouble. there to be のところがよく判りません。
