The needle was placed on the cylinder, leaving 【was】 a mark on the tin as the cylinder was turned.

When someone spoke into the phonograph, the voice caused the air to vibrate. This in turn made the thin plate in the recording unit vibrate. This resulted in vibration of the needle. The needle was placed on the cylinder, leaving a mark on the tin as the cylinder was turned. That mark showed the pattern of the sound waves. As for playback, the cylinder was turned again, and the needle in the playback unit was made to run along the mark.As a result, the needle vibrated. So did the thin plate in the unit, causing the air to vibrate. This reproduced the original voice.Today, people carry small electronic devices that can store thousands of songs ― a result of the wonderful development of sound recording technology started by a great inventor.

In operating the electric pen,I got my current from a Bunsen battery consisting of two glass jars, capped at the top and controlled by a plunger with which I lowered the plates into the acid solution or drew them up when the pen was not in use. Thus the life of the battery was prolonged. The pen had a needlelike point which darted in and out of the writing end so rapidly that the eye could hardly detect it. This was operated by a miniature clectric motor small enough to be attached to the upper end of the pen.The shaft containing the needle was given its motion by cams on the rotating engine shaft so that when the current was turned on,and I wrote with the pen, holding it in a vertical position, it made innumerable tiny punctures on the sheet of paper, tracing the words that comprised the letter. After the master copy of the stencil had thus been made, I took it to the 'press',where it had to be spanned in a frame before the copies could be made.A plain sheet of paper was placed on the press, the stencil was laid on top and an ink roller passed over it. The impression of the handwriting was marked on the under sheet by the ink through the holes made by the needle. It was said that 5,000 copies could be made from a single stencil.

Although California was thought of as a rich state, increases in the number of illegal workers from Mexico and unemployed Americans looking for a warmer place to live had placed a heavy burden on social services and charities. 特に分からない点が、[... was thought of as ...]

The Austro-Hungarian forces had to retreat on the line east of Gorizia (Mount Škabrijel), leaving the heavily damaged town to the Italians. On 8 August, Gorizia fell to Cadorna and a bridgehead was finally established across the Soča (Isonzo) River. The Austro-Hungarians shifted troops to the Gorizia sector to prevent a breakthrough. Content with having established the bridgehead, Cadorna ended the offensive on 17 August. The attack on Gorizia was the most successful Italian offensive along the Isonzo lines and greatly boosted Italian morale - especially since Gorizia, whatever its actual value, had been promoted as a desirable objective, unattainable in earlier battles.

On the northern flank two infantry companies, engineers and pioneers were placed to establish the defensive flank on the left. The divisional artillery and an army field brigade with 54 × 18-pdr field guns and 18 × 4.5-inch howitzers provided fire support, with three field batteries from the 62nd Division further north, to place a protective barrage along the northern flank. The darkness, fog and mud were as bad as on the south bank but the German defence was far less effective. The creeping barrage moved at 100 yards (91 m) in four minutes, slower than the rate on the south bank and the Germans in a small number of strong-points were quickly overcome. The objective was reached by 6:40 a.m. and the defensive flank established, a final German strong-point being captured at 10:50 a.m. No German counter-attack was made until next day, which was stopped by artillery-fire.

The moment she saw me, she turned pale as if seeing a ghost. 上記のas if seeing ですが、元々はas if she saw が分詞構文でseeingとなり、 いったん消した接続詞のas ifを元にもとしたものでしょうか? The moment she saw me, she turned pale as if she saw a ghost. となりますが、 as if she saw a ghost.
