訳を教えてください
「英会話・ぜったい・音読 入門編」という本を勉強しています。 訳がわからない文があるので教えてください。 Once Hokkaido was the land of the Ainu. The names of places show this. 'Sapporo' and 'Asahikawa' are from the Ainu language. 2行目の文の訳を教えてほしいです。 "this "は前の文のことを表しているのでしょうか？ それなら"it"になると思うのです。

そのとおり全文をさしています。itで前文をさすのはちょっと無理があります。厳密には人称代名詞なので、基本的に名詞しか指すことができません。this は限定詞（指示代名詞）といって文を指したりするときに使います。that などと同じ。前の状況をあわらす適切な代名詞は this になります。（ただし、it で前述の状況などを指すときもありますので例外などもあることをお忘れなく） 2行目は直訳ですが「場所の名前に "このこと" が表れています」みたいな感じ

Once safe on land he let out a sigh of relief and looked back, という一文で、once safe on land のところの訳が[やっと岸にたどり着き]なんですが、構造が全くわかりません。また、何故そのような訳になるかも分からないです。once が接続詞safe名詞on前置詞 land名詞何でしょうか？he let out ととのつながりも分からないです。

Fireflies had once disappeared in this river because of river pollution.という文が「一時いなくなっていました」の模範解答としてあげられていますが。過去形で書くことはできないのでしょうか？ ....disappeared once in the.....のように。お願いします。

- 「When a situation」 の訳を教えて
お世話になります。よろしくお願いします。 英熟語の勉強をしているのですが、訳で分からない所があり、困っています。 ちょうどページの真ん中辺りの「boil down to」の項目の https://www.learn4good.com/languages/evrd_phrasal/phrasal-b.htm 「When a situation, question or issue boils down to something else, this is the most important thing. Something is so, because of something else.」という文です。 第一文の「When a situation,」で前置詞などが付かずに「a situation」が使われていますが、この文の意味と構文を教えて頂けると助かります。 どなたかわかる方がいましたら教えてください。 よろしくお願いします。
