populationsの訳について。
いつも学術論文ばっかり読んでいるので、専門以外の英文を読もうと英語の本を買いました。ですが、イントロ部分で、すでにつまずいてしまいました。 What is not always clear is whether this is "spin" is in terms of individual health or directed towards the health of populations. populationの訳と、またシビレルような全体文の訳ができましたら、回答を宜しくお願いします。 ちなみに本のタイトルは、The functional foods revolution.です

必ずしも明確でないのは、このような「スピン」が個人レベルの健康についてのものであるのか、それとも社会全体の健康に向けられたものなのか、ということである。 populationは、＃2のfushigichanさんのおっしゃるとおり「母集団」の意味だと思いますが、individual（個人）に対比する意味で「社会全体」と訳してみました。 私としては、populationよりspinの方が難しいです。 辞書を見ても適当な訳語がありません。 他の方の回答に期待します。 というわけで、他の方のために、前後を参考URLにリンクします。 ファイバーミニとfunctional foodの関係等、これを読めば、かなり薀蓄が語れるかも（？） イントロ部分ということで、多分アマゾンに掲載されているだろうと思って探しましたが、2ページ目ですね。 acroteriaさん、がんばれ！！

No.4です。 What is not always clear is whether this "spin" is in terms of individual health or directed towards the health of populations. 下で紹介されていますexcerptを一読しますと、spinとは本のタイトルにもなっているrevolutionとほぼ同じ意味かもしれません。訳としては、「変革」ぐらいでしょうか。 populationは「国民」と訳したらどうでしょうか。 個人レベルの改善か、個人を超えた改良なのか、そのどっちの意味でこの変革が使われているかが定かでないと言っているものと思います。 functional food science（健康食品科学？）が近年、注目されていることを述べているのでしょう。特に、贅沢病（生活習慣病？）の心臓病やガンから関節の痛み、疲労感、体力低下、胃の痛み・消化関係、アレルギー症などまでそうしたのを治す方法として有効な健康食品の開発があるようです。 つまり、食事による健康こそが現代版パラダイムシフトなのかもしれません。現代版というのは、商品化とかの意味合いです。

再び konkichi です。すみません。 『・・・。生物の全集団（個体群）の正常化に向けて起こるのかどうかである。』 内容によって、正常化は健康維持かも知れません。 【実用的な食料革命】（？）の題名からすると、食べ物と生物の個体と個体群との関係を生態学的に述べている箇所だと考えられますが、憶測の域を出ません。 個体を優先するか、個体群を優先するかの問題だと思いますが・・・。 では。

次の文の訳がうまく作れません。。 Many ecologists assume either that rates of gene flow are sufficiently high that populations across a species'range will respond similarly to the same environmental conditions or that rates of migration enable indivisuals to track changing abiotic factors. 少し生物学の専門的な用語が入っているので補足すると、 gene flow＝遺伝子流動 population＝個体群 species'range＝種の生息域 といった感じです。 引っかかっているのは、population の前の that の働きです。おそらく either はそのあとの or と呼応していて、あとの２つの that は「～ということ」となり assume の目的語になると思うのですが。。その that が何なのかがちょっと。。 よろしくお願いします！
