According to Clear, this informal social control -- first in families, then in small networks of families -- helps to build both discipline and opportunity structures. Then: "Children who grow up in areas where substantial amounts of human capital are not easily acquired struggle with inadequate schools, limited leisure time choices and insufficient formative supports. The systematic absence or weakening of male sources of support makes a bad situation worse and adds a further impediment to overcoming the disadvantages of birth.

1. build 「both discipline and opportunity structures」

Confounding is a central issue for epidemiologic study design. A simple definition of confounding would be the confusion, or, mixing, of effects: this definition implies that the effect of the exposure is mixed together 「ア」the effect of another variable, leading to a bias. Let us illustrate confounding with a classic example: the relation between birth order and the occurrence of Down syndrome. Figure 1 shows data on birth order and Down syndrome from the work of and Mantel. These data show a striking trend in prevalence of Down syndrome with increasing birth order, which we might describe as the effect of birth order on the occurrence of Down syndrome. (1)(The effect of birth order, however, is a blend of whatever effect birth order has by itself and the effect of another variable that is closely correlated with birth order.) The other variable is the age of the mother. Figure 2 gives the relation between mother’s age and the occurrence of Down syndrome from the same data. It indicates a much stronger relation between mother’s age and Down syndrome. Because birth order and the age of the mother are highly correlated, we can expect that mothers giving birth to their fifth baby are , as a group, considerably {イ} than mothers giving birth to their first baby. Therefore, the comparison of high-birth-order babies with lower-birth-order babies is to some extent a comparison of babies born to older mothers with babies born to younger mothers. Thus, the birth-order comparison in Figure 1 mixes the effect of mother’s age with the effect of birth order. The extent of the mixing depends on the extent to which mother’s age is related to birth order. (2) ( A good way to resolve the extent to which one variable’s effect explains the apparent effect of the other is to examine both effects simultaneously.) Figure 3 presents the prevalence of Down syndrome at birth by both birth order and mother’s age simultaneously. (3) (Figure 3 shows clearly that within each category of birth order, looking from the front to the lack, there is the same striking trend in prevalence of Down syndrome with increasing {ウ}. In contrast, within each category of mother’s age, looking from left to right, there is {エ} discernible trend with {オ}.)

We can see, then ,that each stage of the family life cycle involves defferent adjustments and new forms of learning. Although, inevitably, it doesn't fit every single family, identifying the different stages in this way has proved to be very useful for marriage guidance counsellors and other people who are either trying to help people to adjust to changes in their relationships, ore who are trying to do the adjusting themselves. Having said that, the number of modern families which fits this simple pattern is becoming increasingly few. Families break up and re-form with new members, single-parent families are increasing common, and people with grown-up children often find themselves in new relationships which involve bringing up much younger children. Models like Duvall's can be helpful, but they are not be any means the whole pattern of our life span family development. Insight The family life cycle model can help us understand the adaptations that parents must make. But modern families are not always so neat, with overlapping generations, stepchildren from previous relationships and other complications. So, relatively few families follow the pattern exactly the way that the theory proposes.

Mental Evolution in Animals(1883). In the family of the sciences Comparative Psychology may claim nearest kinship with Comparative Anatomy; for just as the latter aims at a scientific comparison of the bodily structures of organisms, so the former aims at a similar com parison of their mental structures. Moreover, in the one science as in the other, the first object is to analyze all the complex structures with which each has respectively to deal. When this analysis, or dissection, has been completed for as great a number of cases as circumstances permit, the next object is to compare with one another all the structures which have been thus analyzed; and, lastly, the results of such comparison supply, in each case alike, the basis for the final object of these sciences, which is that of classifying, with reference to these results, all the structures which have been thus examined.

By the end of the Third Battle of Ypres in November 1917, the effectiveness of the methods of defence introduced in 1917 had been eroded and continuation of a defensive strategy in the west was made impossible. The defeat of Russia gave the German leadership a final opportunity to avoid defeat, rather than the attempts to compete with Allied numerical and industrial superiority, through economic warfare in the Atlantic and the domestic initiatives of the Hindenburg Programme, the Auxiliary Service Law and temporary demobilisation of skilled workers from the army. The accuracy of Great War casualty statistics is disputed. Casualty data available refer to Western Front totals as shown in Winston Churchill's The World Crisis (1923–29) and do not refer directly to the German withdrawal to the Hindenburg Line (Siegfriedstellung) or losses which would be considered "normal wastage", occurring as a consequence of the existence of the Western Front, rather than to particular military operations.

At the outbreak of World War I, 80% of the German army was deployed as seven field armies in the west according to the plan Aufmarsch II West. However, they were then assigned to execute the retired deployment plan Aufmarsch I West, also known as the Schlieffen Plan. This would march German armies through northern Belgium and into France, in an attempt to encircle the French army and then breach the 'second defensive area' of the fortresses of Verdun and Paris and the Marne river. Aufmarsch I West was one of four deployment plans available to the German General Staff in 1914. Each plan favoured certain operations, but did not specify exactly how those operations were to be carried out, leaving the commanding officers to carry those out at their own initiative and with minimal oversight.[clarification needed] Aufmarsch I West, designed for a one-front war with France, had been retired once it became clear it was irrelevant to the wars Germany could expect to face; both Russia and Britain were expected to help France, and there was no possibility of Italian nor Austro-Hungarian troops being available for operations against France. But despite its unsuitability, and the availability of more sensible and decisive options, it retained a certain allure due to its offensive nature and the pessimism of pre-war thinking, which expected offensive operations to be short-lived, costly in casualties, and unlikely to be decisive. Accordingly, the Aufmarsch II West deployment was changed for the offensive of 1914, despite its unrealistic goals and the insufficient forces Germany had available for decisive success. Moltke took Schlieffen's plan and modified the deployment of forces on the western front by reducing the right wing, the one to advance through Belgium, from 85% to 70%. In the end, the Schlieffen plan was so radically modified by Moltke, that it could be more properly called the Moltke Plan.
