Local landlords took up much of the slack, ruling their neighborhoods according to their own wishes 「土地所有者は、自分達の希望通りに〈物事が動くように〉近隣住民に規制を課つつ(又は、そう仕向けつつ)、大いにこの不景気を逆手にとった。」 問題点は 「take up of」をどう訳するのか、直感ですが「take advantage of」と(仮置き)してみました。 「their own wishes」,これは誰の願い?なのという疑問、当然「neighborhoods」もあり得るし、「local landlords」も当然あり得る。 此処で注目したのが「their own wishes」の「own」です。 「地主達の自己利益」とすれば、全文との整合性がとれるのではないかと。 勿論、一番様ご指摘通り、前後の文意が不明ですので、何とも言えませんが、、、、、、、

前後、特に前の文とか、状況説明が若干欲しいと思いますが、、、 Local landlords took up much of the slack, 地元の地主は不足分をかなり補った。 ruling their neighborhoods according to their own wishes 近隣住民に彼ら自身が望んでいたように、ルールを課すことによって こんな感じで、周りとつじつまあいますでしょうか?

英文を見ていてよく分からない語順だったので質問させていただきます。 They happened to be of much the same opinion. 「彼らはたまたまほぼ同じ意見だった。」 という文ですが、"of much"について 自分なりに考えたのですが・・・ １．ofは前置詞でmuchは名詞。全体が形容詞となってopinionを修飾する。 ２．ofは前置詞でmuchはopinionを修飾する形容詞。全体がbe動詞の補語になる。 どちらが正しいのでしょうか？ much of はよく見る語順なんですが、be動詞のあとにof muchと来られても意味がわかりません。 回答お願いします。
