あけましておめでとうございます。旧年中は本当にお世話になりました。　今年もよろしくお願い致します。 現在、Colleen McCulloughのANTHONY AND CLEOPATRAを読んでいます。 背景：Octavianusに対抗するための資金集めに、ローマを離れTarsusに来ているアントニウス。　配下の助言で、エジプトが豊かな国と聞き、クレオパトラを召集する。　お互いに利権を考えて、探りあい、当たり障りのない会話が続く（クレオパトラはなるべく貢物の量を少なくしたい、アントニウスはエジプトからできるだけ搾り取りたい）。　そういう会話の中で、クレオパトラが「今はイタリアが経済問題（businessmen, landowners、veteran soldiersの経済格差）、飢饉に見舞われている中で、本国を離れて良いのか？　ローマに残り、Octavianusを助けるべきではないのか？」と言うと、アントニウスは、「Octavianusを苦しめる為にわざと本国を離れているのだ。」と話す。以下はアントニウスのセリフ、 ～～～～～～上記の本より引用。質問箇所は、『』内のみ～～～～～～ I'm hoping Italia will starve, and I'll do whatever I can to speed the process up. 私も今外国語を勉強中の者です。勉強のため、回答というのではなく、勉強の1つとして書きます。 Oxford　English Dictionaryには特にこのことに関してproverb的なものは見つかりませんでした(というか、探しきれていないということです)。ラテン語系の諺は腐るほどあるとは思いますが、今回の件はそれとは異なるのではないかと考えます。 すなわち、stirring the potの意味の含みが問題だと思います。stirとpotがつながると、どうしても食器関係に縛られて考えがちですが(私もそうなってしまう)、stirの意味する「かき回す」は、事態や状況を引っかき回してぐちゃぐちゃにすると意味があるので、そちらでとらえたらどうでしょうか？ potの意味もmeltingpot(本来は冶金の用語ですよね)のように、中にややこしい色々なものが入れられている「るつぼ」的にとらえたらいかがでしょう？領主たちがイタリアか何か1つの限られた地域で事態を引っ掻き回して混乱させているところを、仕方なくオクタビアヌス(アウグストゥス)が事態を収拾するため、一苦労しなければならなくなるといった比喩なのではないかと推測します。 また、cook自体も、料理するという意味の周辺に、なにかしら工夫をして手を加えるという感じが含まれていますし、cook the bookといえば帳簿をごまかす意味になるし(うまくいけば腕の良い「料理人」とも言えますでしょう)、やりすぎるとかえって事態が悪化したり、ひどくへとへとにもなること(UKの俗語)につながるみたいですので、cookはやりくりしなければならない程度の意味が含まれているのではないかと推測します。 要するに、領主たちが比較的狭いイタリア地域で少々スケールの小さい事件などを起こして事態を面倒にさせ、仕方なくオクタヴィアヌスが事態の収拾に乗り出して苦労する、よって、エジプトを見る余裕がなくなるという意味ではないかと思います。 ポンペイウスなどがきっと、イタリアへの食糧輸入の権限をおもちなんでしょう。これらを優遇することで、イタリアへの食糧供給を滞らせ、領主がローマ政府に払う税金を少なくすれば、重装歩兵の主役たるローマ市民への給金、食糧が減るわけで、それらの面倒を見なくてはならないオクタヴィアヌスが苦しむことになるという文脈ですね。 stirring the potは、壷をかき回すという原義に上記のような比喩的な意味合いを重ね合わせた表現ではないかと推測します。

御回答ありがとうございます。 ＞すなわち、stirring the potの意味の含みが問題だと思います。 僕も慣用句ではないと思います。　この小説の登場人物たちは喩えと使って自分の意思を伝える事がおおいんです。　大概は簡単な喩えで分かり易いんですが、今回は、、、（大泣） ＞stirの意味する「かき回す」は、事態や状況を引っかき回してぐちゃぐちゃにすると意味があるので ＞cook自体も～、なにかしら工夫をして手を加えるという感じが含まれていますし、 その可能性もありますね～！　 ＞領主たちが比較的狭いイタリア地域で少々スケールの小さい事件などを起こして事態を面倒にさせ、 ＞仕方なくオクタヴィアヌスが事態の収拾に乗り出して苦労する、よって、エジプトを見る余裕がなくなる stirとcookをそういう意味にとるとそいう可能性もありますね～！ ＞ポンペイウスなどがきっと、イタリアへの食糧輸入の権限をおもちなんでしょう ポンペイウスは敵で、わざと自分では退治せずにOctavianusを困らせているのです。 ありがとうございました。
