＃３ですが、株関連のことはまったく分からないので的はずれな回答かもしれませんけど、＃3でも書きましたとおり文字通りの意味でとると「株価に与える影響が大きい株価材料」ということになるのではないかと思ったわけです。 噴飯ものかもしれませんが私訳です： 「価格変動率がまだ急上昇している状態では、株へのアプローチは、短期ので、市場関連的リスクよりむしろ個別株のリスクを伴う強力な株価材料トレードに力点を置くことになろう」

catalyst の意味はこちらに出てました。 http://creating-planet.com/Frameset06.html ＞触媒; 変化のきっかけを与える人［物，事］の意味で、投資においては株価を上昇させる材料を指す hard catalyst はおそらく触媒作用が激しいということを意味するのではないでしょうか。お酒が強いことを意味するときにもhard を使いますので。 soft catalyst は文字通り「ソフトな触媒作用」ですから株価に与える影響は緩やかで、hard catalyst は株価に与える影響が強力なんだと思います。

ありがとうございます。catalystが株価材料であることは間違いないと思います。ではhard catalyst trade ではどのような意味になるのでしょうか。
正確な訳はわかりませんが、「急騰あるいは急落を起こすための仕掛け的な取引」というような意味だと思います。 要はその売買取引に触発されて他の会社やトレーダーが一斉に売買した結果、株価が急騰・急落することを期待している、そんな感じじゃないかと。 なんかうまく訳せなくてすみません。

ありがとうございました。調べたところ、soft catalyst というのが、株価の上昇を促すための会社側のアクションのようで、hard はこれとの対称で、oldskoolさんのご回答のように投資家側からのアクションだとは思います。

catalyst は、文字どおりにとれば「触媒」だと思います。 素人でよくは分りませんが、Wikipedia を見ると、金属錯体を利用するものがあるという記述があるので、ひょっとしたら hard が付くのは「金属」の意味なのではないでしょうか。 「高価な金属（白金、パラジウムなど）を触媒として用いる場合は」という記述があります。 そういったものの取り引きのこと？

ありがとうございました。しかし、この文の前半にequity bookとありますので、これは株式取引の戦略を指しているものと思われます。

Catalyst3550と2950は、パケット（フレーム）の処理速度の違いってあるのでしょうか？2950ではVLAN間ルーティングが不可なので、パケットが多少遅延するような気もするんですが、根本的に（ハード的？）に処理能力が違うのでしょうかね？
