英文の文法的解釈（助動詞のあとが動詞の原形でない場合）

例文　When Becky found that another baby on the way,she did what she could to help her three-year-old son Tom prepare for the new baby. 　この英文で回答お願いします。 ※　couldのあとですが、不定詞をとっているようです。説明がつく文法をしらないのだと思います。教えて下さい。 ※　－で区切るときはyearは複数形でなくてよいのでしょうか？ ※whatは関係代名詞でよいでしょうか？だとするとthing which にしたばあい、thingは後続の文のどこにはいりますか？

こんにちは、補足拝見しました。 ＞質問のしかたが、よくありませんでした。thingを先行詞にとっているので、文章を２つに分けることができますよね？ ＞回答より考えるとするなら、she could do the thing to help her three-year-old son Tom prepare for the new baby.となるので良いでしょうか？ ＞そうするとこの文の訳に説明がつきそうです。 質問者さんは、この文の訳をお持ちなんですよね？ とりあえず、訳は「ベッキーはお腹に新しい赤ん坊がいる事を知ると、３歳の息子トムが新しい赤ん坊に対して心構えができるようにできる限りの事をした。」です。 she did what she could（彼女は、できる限りのことをした。）の部分を二つに分けたいのでしょうか？　分けないほうがよいと思います。No1で既に回答した、she did 『the thing which』 she could to help her three-year-old son Tom prepare for the new baby.の他に、she did 『anything』 she could to help her three-year-old son Tom prepare for the new baby.とも書き換えられます。 しかし、she did. she could do the thing to help her three-year-old son Tom prepare for the new babyだと、Whatの書き換えにはならず、意味が変わります「彼女はした。　彼女は３歳の息子トムが新しい赤ん坊に対して心構えができるようになる事をすることができた。」 ご参考までに、

こんにちは、 ＞※　couldのあとですが、不定詞をとっているようです。説明がつく文法をしらないのだと思います。教えて下さい。 これは,she did what she could (do) to help herと同じ動詞が繰り返し来る場合は省略できるということです。 なので、to不定詞ではなくて、見えない「do」（もちろん原型）が続いています。 ＞－で区切るときはyearは複数形でなくてよいのでしょうか？ はい。＜数詞＋単数名詞＞です。 ＞※whatは関係代名詞でよいでしょうか？だとするとthing which にしたばあい、thingは後続の文のどこにはいりますか？ ～　she did the thing which she could ～ と成ります。 ご参考までに、
