解説をお願いします
一応自分でも解いてみたのですが、答えに自信がないので解説をお願いします。 全て四択問題です。 1. Such a mistake could cost us thousands, if ( ) millions of pounds. 1. so 2. ever 3. any 4. not 私は 4. not を選びました。 if節の中身を省略せずに書くと if (such a mistake could) not (cost) millions ～ という感じになるのかなぁと思いました。 2. Everything has been attempted in principle, but nothing much ( ) in practice. 1. accomplish 2. accomplishes 3. accomplished 4. accomplishing 私は 3．accomplished を選びました。 has been が前に省略されていて、完了形の受動態の形になるのかなぁと思いました。 3. She tried to lift the box, ( ) impossible. 1. which she found it 2. which she found 3. that she found was 4. but she found 私の答えは 2. which she found です。 which = but it として but she found it impossible という形に出来るからと考えました。 4．I wish you ( ) him the truth. 1. hadn't told 2. haven't told 3. aren't told 4. will tell 私の答えは 1. hadn't told です。 ここは普通に仮定法過去完了の形を使いました。 回答お待ちしております。

お示しの解答はすべて正しいと思います。 １は、「(even) if (it does) not (cost) millions of pounds」のことです。 「even if」は「たとえ～だとしても」という意味の譲歩を表しますが、「even」がよく省略されます。否定文が続けば「たとえ～でないとしても」という訳になります。 接続詞に続く「主語」や「動詞」は、前に同じようなものが出ている場合に省略されることがありますので、復元は比較的容易です。 ただし、譲歩や条件を表す副詞節の中の動詞は仮定法や時制の一致でない限り「現在形」が良いでしょう。ちなみに主節の「could」は、仮定法の帰結節を表すわけではなくて「現在の推量」を表します。 ２も、前で用いられている「has been」が省略されていると考えられます。「accomplished」が続くことで現在完了の受動態を表しています。 なお、接続詞の「but」がなければ「, nothing much (being) accomplished in practice」という分詞構文にすることもできます。 ３は、「which」が接続詞の「but」と仮目的語の「it」の代りだと考えられます。 ４は、ご指摘の通り仮定法過去完了ですね。 どれも案外ひっかかりやすい問題だと思いますが、基本的な知識を元によく考えて正解を導きだしていると思います。無粋な解説は不要だったかもしれませんが、ご参考になれば・・・。

1 thousands (if not millions) of ～で 「たとえ何百万でなくても，何千もの～」 ですので，特に not は動詞を否定しているわけではありません。 したがって，何の省略というのは難しいです。 何百万もかからないだろう，ということには違いがないのですが。 3 前節，文を受ける継続用法の which で，正しいです。 4 wish の後で仮定法過去か仮定法過去完了になるはずで，選択肢の中には 1 しかありません。

英語の文法問題 She tried to lift the box, ( )impossible. (1)which she found it (2)which she found 正解は(2) itの慣用句表現でfind it...to doとあり、to doの部分が形容詞では駄目だということは分かっているのですが、何故(1)が×で(2)が○なのかが明確に分かりません。 正誤問題でこのような問題がでてきたら自信を持って回答出来ないと思うので明確な理解を得たいと思ってます。 どなたか説明していただけないでしょうか？

「I couldn't have done it without your help.(あなたの助けなしでは出来なかった。)」 質問(1)withoutはbut forに書き換えが可能ですか？また、その部分を"～があれば"と言いたいときはwithで合っていますか？ 質問(2)「If you hadn't helped me, I couldn't have done it.」「If it hadn't been for your help, I couldn't have done it.」これら2つの英文は上の英文と同じ意味になりますか？前者は、なんとなく会話で使うとしたら、不自然なようにも思います。
