こんにちは、 ここは定冠詞が無くて正しい英文です。 英文法 標準問題精講 原仙作著 （３５ページ） によれば、 ～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～ 身分や公職を表す普通名詞は、ある種の動詞の補語になった場合には冠詞をつけない。 He was chosen (appointed, elected) chairman (president, etc). ～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～ ＞(2)ここでのdecide (that)で、決めるという用法ではなく、（弱い意味で）～だと判断する,思うという用法ですよね？ 「判断する＝心に決める」ですよね？ どっちも同じに感じますが、兎に角、 彼らの父は、ジョンが合衆国の大統領になるべきだと心に決めた（判断した）。

No.2 の回答を投稿した者です。 No.5 で zatousan のご指摘を受けて調べてみましたら、冠詞のつかない president の用例を実際に見て、納得するところがありましたので、追加で投稿いたします。 文字どおり「参考意見」です。 タイトルもズバリ "How to Become President of the United States" という文で、その中に anyone can become president というセンテンスがありました。 → http://www.ehow.com/how_136497_become-president-united.html zatousan の書かれておられるように、無冠詞で小文字で書く president をとる動詞があるみたいです （勉強になりました）。 ただし、be の場合は be President となり、無冠詞の場合、大文字になるように思われます。 The Vice-President of the United States shall be President of the Senate, but shall have no Vote, unless they be equally divided. これは、アメリカ合衆国憲法、第1条第3項にある文です。 → http://historydocuments.thefreelibrary.com/Constitution-of-The-United-States 以下は私の考察（推測）です。 zatousan が示しておられる動詞 choose, appoint, elect と、それに質問者さまの例文に出ていた become と、これらの動詞が用いられる、その時点では、対象の人物は、まだ「大統領」に就任してはいません。 大統領に「当選」したからといって、ただちに前任者と入れ替わるわけではありません （その時点の「大統領」は前任者です）。 「就任式（宣誓）」を経て、初めて本当に「大統領」になるわけです。 既に大統領であれば be President ですが、「将来大統領になる」という表現 (become President) の場合は、その時点では大統領ではないわけですから、President ということにしてしまうと、「２人の大統領」が存在することになってしまう。 だから、その場合は、対象者に対して President という表現は適用されない、ということではないでしょうか。 それは、choose や appoint や elect といった動詞の目的語になる場合も同様に考えられます。 そんなふうに私は考えました。

ここは単純に「彼らの父は、ジョンが合衆国の大統領になるべきだと（心に）決めた」でいいんじゃないでしょうか？

他の解釈もできるのかもしれませんが、私は、「彼らの父は、ジョンが合衆国の大統領になるに違いないと思った」というふうに、強い意味に読みました （つまり、should を「当然」の用法だとみなしました）。 なお、President でも the president でもなく、無冠詞の president なのは、ちょっと奇異に感じました。 第35代アメリカ合衆国大統領 John F. Kennedy のことでしょうか。

専門家ではないですが、英語圏在住10年です。 USの大統領は役職としても一人しかいないので、私なら、theを入れます。 前後の内容がわからないのでアレですが、Their fatherって誰？ They decided John should be the president of the U.S. の方がスマートだと思います。

訂正です (1)presidentを辞書で引くと、the presidentまたはPresidentとして使うように書いてありますが、the presidentでもPresidentでもなく無冠詞（president）なのは官職・身分を表すからですよね？ 一応高校レベルの文法と単語帳はやりました・・

動詞believeについての質問です。 yahoo辞書（プログレッシブ英和中辞典）で調べていたんですが http://dic.yahoo.co.jp/dsearch?enc=UTF-8&stype=1&dtype=1&p=believe It is believed that the president has decided to resign. ［＝The president is believed to have decided to resign. ］ 社長は辞任を決意したと目されている という例文が載っていました。 他の例文では「believe A to do」の形がとれないとありますが、それなら The president is believed to have decided to resign. という表現もムリなのでは？と思いました。 They believe the president to have decided to resign. の受動態に見えるのですが・・・ 実際の英会話では普通に通じそうですが “日本の英文法”的に何故この文が正しいのか、ご教示ください。
