英語の長文を読んでいて、こんな文章が出てきました。 構文がうまくつかめず悩んでいます。 もしお分かりの方がいらっしゃったら、教えていただけると幸いです。 Surely in no other craft as in that of the sea do the hearts of those already launched to sink or swim go out so much to the youth on the brink, looking with shining eyes upon that glitter of the vast surface which is only a reflection of his own glances full of fire. とくに、do をどういう構文としてとるか、教えていただきたいです。 looking以下が分分詞構文だと言うのは分かるのですが。 宜しくお願いいたします。

No.4のgoogoo1956です。できるだけ英語の語順を尊重した上で、さらに少し意訳をしてみましょう。 参考訳(2)： 「一般の人間関係においてはおよそ考えられないことだが、船乗りたちの間では命がけの仕事に熟練した先輩たちの大きな愛情が、ほんの駆け出しで未経験の若者たち、すなわち彼らの視線の中に含まれたあふれんばかりの情熱をただ映し出しているかのようにキラキラと輝く広大な海を生き生きとした瞳で見つめているような若者たちに対して、たっぷりと注がれるのである。」 状況が少し分かりやすくなったのではないでしょうか。ご参考になれば・・・。

No.1 の回答者です。 sink or swim はこの場合もちろん動詞です。前に to がついているので、いわゆる to不定詞で launched につながることになります。 この文では、品詞の上では動詞ですが、sink or swim はもちろん慣用表現で、これで名詞として使用できます。「一か八か（の賭け）」 動詞として使った場合は「一か八かやってみる・賭けてみる」の意となるでしょう。 訳はもっと文脈、これ以前の文章あるいは話の展開がないと正確な解釈・訳は無理と思います。いずれにせよ、もう寝ますので、今日はこれまでで失礼します。

構文がわからないということらしいので、構文・文法面の説明のみです。 否定語を含む in no other craft ～ を強調のために倒置で前に出したので、述語の go out が二つの要素 do と go out にわかれ、do が主語より前に置かれます。これはこういう否定語を含む倒置の場合に通例起こることです。 元の述語が仮に goes out なら do ではなくて does となります。went なら did になります。 やや厚めの文法書をご覧になればいろんな例文が載っていると思います。 as はこの場合 than の意味。

That book did something not many other things I had thus far encountered in life were able to do ---it took me out of myself and put me into a larger world ---not all that much larger, now that I come to think about it,but large enough to stir my imagination. 自分なりに訳したら「あの本は私がこれまでのところ人生で遭遇した他のそれほど大きくないものができた何かをした。それは、私を自分自身から連れだし、より大きい世界に私を入れました。今や私はより大きい世界について考えるようになるので、はるかに大きい全ての世界は、しかし私の想像力をかきたてるくらいに広い世界の全てとは限らない」と、意味不明な訳になってしまいました・・・。特にわからない箇所は were able to do のdoは何をさしているのか、now thatはいまや～なのだからと訳していいのか、ということです。できれば全ての訳を教えてください
