元となっているのは英国の詩人Alfred Tennysonの"In Memoriam AHH" の一篇（XXVII "I envy not in any moods"）に出てくる"'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all"です。和訳（の定訳）についてはゴメンナサイ。アルフレッド・テニスンで検索されたら出てくるのではないかと思います。 この部分は、ご質問での例のようにLovedの部分を他の言葉に変えたりしてよく引用されます。
