内容は間違っていないと思うけど、もう少し分かりやすい文にしたいです。
Among the things that the idea of the do or michi means is that hard work, if properly applied, is good in its own right, important for its own sake. 「道（どう）」ないし「道（みち）」が意味するものの中のひとつは、よく働くことで、それが適切に適用されるならば、それそのものは善である、それ自体が重要であるということである。 ↑この英訳を、もっと分かりやすく訳すにはどのようにすればいいでしょうか？「それ自体が重要であるということである。」は、文章が繋がっていない感じがするのですが。。

「道（どう）」ないし「道（みち）」が意味するものの中に、勤勉は適切に適用されればそれ自体で善でありそれ自体が重要である、ということがある。 ＞「それ自体が重要であるということである。」は、文章が繋がっていない感じがするのですが。。 この部分はhard work is good in its own right, (and hard work is) important for its own sake. ということで、isからつながっていると思います。

「道（どう）」あるいは「道（みち）」という言葉が意味するもの の中に、よく働くこと（それが適切に適用されればだが）は、働く こと自体よい事であり、働くこと自体の動機も重要である、という ことがある。

if properly appliedは間にはさんであるだけで、that以下のhard work is good in its own right, important for its own sakeがつながった文章だと思います。 また、hard workは、「よく励むこと」のように考えるといいのではないでしょうか。
