A linear relation とは？

鉱物関係の文献で "A linear relation was established between the decrease of iron spacing and increase of aluminum contents."というのがあり、「鉄（分）の間隔の減少とアルミニウムの含有量の増加との間にa linear relation が立証された。」といった内容かと思うのですが、この linear relationって何でしょうか？　教えて下さい。

A linear relation そのまま「線形の関係」ですね。 線形性を持つことが立証された、と訳するといいでしょう。 線形の定義は 作用f(x)が、任意の定数a,bに対して 　　　　f(ax+by)=af(x)+bf(y) を満たすとき「f(x)は線形性をもつ」 ですが、早い話、鉄分の間隔が減少すればアルミ含有量が増え、鉄分の間隔が増えればアルミ含有量が減少する、と言うことです。

比例式の関係になる、ということです。 「鉄分の間隔」をＹ、「アルミニウムの含有量」をＸとすると、 ｙ＝Ａｘ＋Ｂ の関係で表せるということですね。 グラフだと直線になるので、「linear」と呼ばれるのです。
