日本語で文章をつなげるときのニュアンスと同様で、自分なりに感覚をつかんでそれぞれ合わせていってはどうでしょうか？ and then はそれから（そんでもって、加えて、さらに、反面、etc etc)という感じです。 英語の小説などをたくさん読むと文脈によってどう使用されているか勘がつかめると思います。国語問題の”そして、しかし、それから”から選択ってのと似てますね。 1段落中にandは一度だけ使うとか。

お世話になります。 今日は以下の問題です。 問題： （ ）に入る適当な語を記せ、 One step further, ( ) you will fall over the precipice. 私の回答 ： then 問題集の回答： and then という回答は私が問題を読んだ時に口をついて出てきてしまったのでそのまま書きました。 あとで回答を見ると and になっているので調べたのですが、 その本の中で and を要求しそうなのは 命令文 + and の使い方で Hurry up, and you'll catch the bus. のような使い方ですが、どうも問題の文は命令文ではない。 それどころか文章として不完全なので、これは If you go one step farther, の If you go が 省略された形だろうと解釈しました。 その前提で英辞朗で then を調べると以下の例文がありました。 If she takes good care of him, then we'll think about a bird. この文と If you go one step farther, then you will fall over the precipice. は全く同じに見えます。また If you go one step farther, and you will fall over the precipice. とも同じに見えます。 ここで質問ですが、and は接続詞、 then は副詞、形容詞、（名詞） となっています。 品詞が見事に違っているのに、ここまで同じ使い方、同じ意味を成すというのがどうも理解できません。 ○有り得ることでしょうか？ ○それとも私の前提（If仮定文）や解釈に間違いがあり、 and にしなくてはならない積極的理由がありますか？ ○また then でも使えるとした時、試験としては then でも 正解になるのでしょうか？（これはおまけの質問です） よろしくお願いします。

then again というイディオムを巡って悩んでいます。辞書(alc)では「そうではなくて」となっていたように思います。しかしながら以下に掲げる文章において、「そうではなくて」という意味でこのイディオムを使用していないように思えるのです。 “All the debate just goes by us, downstream. Nobody seems to convert anybody.”He added, “There's a certain arrogance about the people in power today that makes them immune to criticism and satire. then は，「過去，あるいは未来のあるとき」を表しますが，たとえば， A holiday is a day when people don't go to work or school. という文を２文に分けて説明するとき A holiday is a day. People don't go to work or school then. のように then を用いることができるのでしょうか。 特定の過去の休日に，とか，未来の休日に，というのでなく，一般的に休日には，という意味を then で表すことができるのでしょうか。 People don't go to work or school の後は，then, on that day, on it はいずれも可能でしょうか。

In any society where people frequently move from one place to another,friendships can be close and strong for a while and then disappear when the individuals move away from each other. Neither side feels especially slighted when this occurs. Both individuals may write to each other for a year or two, then no more. 上の文章でthen が２つ有りますがその役目が分かりません、誰か助けてください。
