こんにちは。 ＃３さんがおっしゃっているのですが、これはスラングとして使われている be/get on somebody's back だと思います。 非難する、のほかに「プレッシャーをかける」みたいな意味合いもあるので、よくドラマなどにもあるように、教育者で出来の良い親が、出来の悪い子供に、その人生を非難しつつプレッシャーをかける感じを表しているのではないかと思います。

力がかかっているという部分が重要ですから、責める、としてもよいと思います。 どれだけの力がかかっているのかというのはcontext次第なので（お父さんの性格とか、大きく影響しますよね）、全体から読み取るようにしてください。

スラングですが、「 be on someone's back 」で １ 「非難する」 「いじめる」 「困らせる」 ２ 気持ち、財政的、物質的に 「頼る」 「当てにする」 「おんぶする」 という意味があります。 この場合は １ のようです。

「結果として、絶えずと言ってよいほど背中越しにものを言っていた」ではないでしょうか。背中にへばりついている感じです。息子が聞こうとしていない、向き合おうとしていない感じ、そして親父が口うるさい感じを出そうとした表現ではないでしょうか。

父親はアカデミック、つまり頭を使って仕事をしていて、息子は手を使って仕事をしている、つまりは肉体労働者です。 父親は息子にもっと頭のほうをつかってほしいと思っている。 on の基本的なイメージは「くっついている」です。 「くっついている」ということは「圧力」がかかっています。 そうすると第二パラグラフは、 結果として父親はコンスタントに息子に（頭を使う仕事をしなさいと）促した。 と読み取れます。 背中を押しているイメージですね。 どうでしょうか。

あぁ、なるほど！ ピンと来ました。 be on the boy's back「その少年を責める」 と訳せると思うのですが、どうでしょうか？
