万引きについての英文です。19世紀ころから、とくに主婦の万引きが出現しだしたと、いうあとに続き、 The rigid Victorian morality didn't know how to categorize these otherwise respectable women, so doctors invented a new disease called "kleptomania" impulsive behavior over which the shoplifter was believed to have control. これに対応する翻訳は、こうかかれています。 厳格なビクトリア朝時代の道徳のもとでは、万引きさえしなければ立派な身分のこれらの女性たちを、どのように分類したらいいのか不明であった。そこで医師たちは、万引きしている当人にはほとんどコントロールすることができないと信じられた衝動的な行動、つまり「病的盗癖」という名の新しい病気を考え出したのである。 で、英文の、impulsive behavior over which ・・・のoverがよくわからないのです。意味はどうなのでしょうか？ニュアンス的に文の中で役割があるのでしょうか？ よろしくお願いします。

「私が会った人」「私が話をした人」日本語ではあまり変わらないようですが，英語にすると，the person whom I saw, the person with whom I spoke と変わってきます。saw は I saw the person と言えますが，spoke は I spoke the person とは言えず，I spoke with the person にしなければなりません。それが関係代名詞を用いる場合にも with whom となって表れるのです。 「彼らがコントロールできない行動」も，behavior which we have control としてしまうと，we have control behavior と言えなければなりませんが，control はここでは名詞であり，have control の後に目的語のような behavior を置くことはできません。have control over behavior と前置詞 over を介することで正しくつながるのです。 日本語にしてしまうと，このような前置詞の意味が自然消滅してしまいますので，注意が必要です。

control over～ 管理する、掌握する のoverが関係代名詞whichの前に出ていると思います。 behaviorにかかります。 英語ではよく使う表現です。 自信はありませんが、訳に誤りがあるのは? …コントロールすることができると信じられた衝動的な行動を「病的盗癖」という名の新しい病気を考え出したのである。 位に思えますが…。 コントロールできると信じられていたからこそ、分類できず、病気として捕らえたのではないのでしょうか? 権威ある人の訳なら私の間違いだと思いますが…。 只、関係代名詞の前のoverの用法には、影響ないことですが。

the shoplifter was believed to have control over impulsive behavior とかかるのでしょう。ただ、原文を見ると control の前に no が抜けていると思いますが、どうでしょうか。

I can ask Davis over in research and design. （研究開発部門のデイビスに頼むことができる） という文章がありました。 Ask 目的語 to do ならわかるのですが、overは前置詞だし・・・ 動詞が省略されているのでしょうか？ Ask over という成句だと「家に招く」になるので しっくり来る解釈ができません。 よろしくお願いします。
