couldは仮定法過去、丁寧な言い方で相手を敬う場合、一般的な過去の事実 に使用します。 might も同様な使い方をします。 Might I help you?
canとbe able toの違いに振り返る必要があると思います。couldは単にcanの過去形というだけでなく、仮定法過去の意味合いも含んでおります。

Could は色々な意味で使われるので分かりにくいのですが慣れると結構日常の会話で多く使われます。直訳は遠慮しますが 最初は：提案的です ”びっくりさせてやれば良かったのに、 やればできたのに”（言った方は本気ではなく少しからかっているようです） 2番目：単純な可能性の過去で 否定的な意味があり できたと思う（できないでしょう）ですが その後にnot が有るのでその逆でかなり婉曲的ですが日本語でいえば、No なんていえる”受け入れざる得ないでしょう” ほどの意味でしょう。 状況から違っていればお知らせください。

Maybe you are busy on Friday with going out with friends? 金曜日はまる１日やすみだよ。 もしあなたが休みだったらメッセでながく？？？？？ 金曜は多分あなたは友達とでかけて忙しいよね。 ２番目のcouldは、過去じゃないですよね？ 丁寧語のcouldですか？でもcanでもいいと思いますが。 I amが現在で金曜日はこれからくるのにもしここのcouldが過去だったら変なのかと。 よくわかりません。 お願いします

The food is fantastic but I could forego the decorations. "料理は素晴らしいのだが装飾はなしで済ませてほしい" naver辞書の”could”に、上記のような例文がありました。 but 以下、forgo ＝ v.先行する ↓ ”料理は素晴らしい、だけど、装飾を先行させることができたのに” ？？？ could のニュアンスがよくわかりません。 どうぞよろしくおねがいします。 p.s. また、 "I wish I were thin like her. I envy her." "You could go on a diet." という例文もありました。 訳は「ダイエットすれば」でした。 ニュアンスは 「君はダイエットすることもできたよね（すればよかったのに）」 という感じかなあと思いました。合っていますでしょうか？

So why not just say this instead of being argumentative? She could also try to understand what he's thinking and feeling. How does he feel? He feels shut out and ignored. She could say, "I feel put down and angry, but I know there's some truth in what you say. Apparently you think I've put my career first and you feel rejected. Is this the way you feel? couldの用法に「仮定の能力（～しようと思えばできる）」がありますが、いくつか質問があります。 1．couldは「過去の能力」の用法で使われることが多いようですが、「仮定の能力」の用法ではよく用い られているのですか？ 2．「仮定」ということは仮定法のcouldと全く同じということですか？ 3．You could go on a diet (あなたはダイエットを始めようと思えばできます）を例にとると、これは「あな たはダイエットを始めることができたのに」とも取れますが、適当に解釈するしかないのでしょうか？ 4．canには能力の意味がありますが、couldの「仮定の能力」とはどう違いますか？
