as if の意味についてお聞きいたします。 一通り参考書を読んだら、よけいに疑問が湧いて分からなくなりました。 as if ＋仮定法過去＝現在の意味を表す と書かれていたのですが、 It was as if they were trying to get a year's as if they were trying to get a year's information in one afternoon. という文ですが、これは過去のことを意味している文のように思われるのですが、どう理解すればよいのでしょうか？ さらに、Once we were back from the tour, Americans would stop asking questions. It was as if a curtain had come down on a stage. という文の解釈の仕方が分かりません。いったんホテルに戻るとアメリカ人は質問をやめ、それは、ステージに幕がおりたかのようだった。という訳ですが、as if の使い方からすると、過去のことを表すように書かれていたように解釈しているのですが、「質問を止めた時幕が既におりていたみたいになり、仮定法過去完了を用いるのは主節の動詞の表すときより前のことを述べる場合、というのと違っているように感じるのですが・・・」

伊藤和夫氏の某参考書の問題です、新潟大学の問題だそうです。 It is often possible to make known what one wants and what he is thinking about by means of gestures, without the use of words, and it may be that men talked by signs before they used spoken language. There are many gestures which are still used to express ideas and which almost everybody understands. When one shakes his head on being asked a question we understand that he means "no," just as well as if he had spoken the word. Similarly if he nods in response to a question we understand that he means "yes." But besides these two simple forms of answering a question we may express a great many other ideas by signs. Putting the forefinger to the lips when someone is talking means "keep quiet" just as clearly as if these words were spoken aloud. Holding up both hands means "I surrender." 英語圏で日本語を教えています。 助詞の「で」は様々な関係を表すかと思うのですが 表題のような「ポッドキャストで音楽を聞く」という文章の場合 ポッドキャストは、音楽を聞くという動作の「手段・方法」であるという考え方で正しいでしょうか。 ポッドキャストは、ラジオやヘッドフォンといった「物を使用する手段」とは異なるため 「目的語」にはなっても「手段」にはならず文章としておかしいと手厳しく指摘を受け、悪い例文という流れで今日は終わりました。 ただ英語表現としては不自然でも、日本語ではそのように使うことを後日補足したいと思っています。 例えば「ブログで読む」「Youtubeで観る」「LINEで話す」など、類似例は枚挙にいとまがありません。 私なりに考え、ラジオなどの場合（例：ラジオで聞く）は「using a device」、 ポッドキャストや Youtube などの場合は「using a programme」ではどうか、 という考えにたどり着き今に至るのですが、どう思われますか。 「Location」の意味の「で」ではないか、という意見もありました。 ポッドキャストそのものを用いたのが悪かったのではないか、と言う意見もありました。 しかしポッドキャストには音楽チャンネルがあります。 混乱しています。 できれば日本語と英語両方の概念に詳しい方に、アドバイスをいただけますと大変助かります。 （「この英語表現で説明すれば、英語話者にはしっくりくる」というような。） どうぞよろしくお願いします。

重力と張力に関係する文章中に、 A wet fly has to lift many times its own weight. という文があったのですが、many times の意味がわかりません。 自分としては、「濡れたハエは自分の体重を何度も持ち上げなければならない。」だと思うのですが、many timesの位置が微妙なので、 「何倍も」と訳すのか、だけどそれだとas many times as～となるではないか・・・よくわかりません。教えてください。 実は先日、この文章に関する別の質問（No.2492701）をさせていただきましたが、またわからないことがあったので今回投稿しました。
