　＃１です。補足です。 ＞＞the clothesはなぜtheと特定されているのでしょうか？ 　衣類全般ではなく「出て行く時に着ていた」もの「だけ」と「今すぐ」しなければならなかったことの強調で、当然ですが決まり文句でもあるからでしょう。
