最初の例では、 a man in the possession of "the ammunition" "a man," in whose possession the ammunition was (found) という形ですので、"the ammunition" ≠ "a man" です。 二つ目の例は、 A lobbyist’s principal is the person on behalf of whom (lobbyist principal's), and for whose (lobbyist principal's) benefit the lobbyist engages in lobbying, and who (lobbyist principal) directly employs, appoints, or retains the lobbyist to engage in lobbying. という形にすることができるので、 "on whose behalf (on lobbyist principal's behalf)" ＝ "on behalf of whom (on behalf of lobbyist principal's)" とすることができると思います。 文法的な説明になっていないかも知れませんが、すみません、私は文法苦手なものですから...。<m(__)m>

「更なる尋問の結果、弾薬を所持していたその男は、Atholone警察署に勤務する２４歳の警察官であるということが判明した。」 "the man in whose possession the ammunition was found was a ～" は、 "the man, in whose possession the ammunition was found, was a ～" とすると分かりやすくなるかも知れません。平たくすると、 "the ammunition was found in the possession of a man who was a ～" になります。

in the possession of Aが関係詞になるとA（先行詞）, in whose possessionとofではなくwhoseが使われると考えればよいのでしょか。 そうであれば， A lobbyist’s principal is the person on whose behalf and for whose benefit the lobbyist engages in lobbying and who directly employs, appoints, or retains a lobbyist to engage in lobbying. もおなじようにon behalf of Aのof Aがwhoseに変わったものと考えられますか。

英語の問題などで出題される並べかえのもんだいなのですが、I(in the train/the old man/found/a seat).の（ ）内の並べかえよ。という問題なのですが。 私はたぶんI found a seat the old man in the train.かI found a seat in the train the old man.のどちらかだと思うのですが、よくわかりません。 誰か教えてください。

in what S+Vという表現がよくわかりませんので質問します。Daily Yomiuriの過去の記事からです。 A man and his two sons were found dead Tuesday in their house in Nemuro, eastern Hokkaido, in what police suspect was a murder-suicide. このin whatの部分には本来ならwhichが来て前の文全体を先行詞として受けると思いますが、なぜinがあるのかわからないのです。またwhatの方もたいていの場合what=the thing whichと置き換えれば意味が通じるのですがin the thing whichとしても意味が通らずよくわかりません。 この表現は他にも何度か見ましたのでたぶんよく使われる表現なのだと思いますが、それだけに気になります。よろしくお願いします。

withの用法について教えてください。 With the old man was a little boy, whose name was Jim. 老人のそばにいる少年の名前はジムと言った。 という意味なのだと思いますが、文章の主語は何になりますか。 倒置がおこっていて、A little boy was with the old man, whose name was Jim.が本来の文章かなとも思いましたが、 withが名詞節をつくり、それが補語になることはないですよね。 Withが名詞節をつくり、主語になる特殊用法でもあるのかと思い、 文法書を見てみましたが、どうもなさそうです。 With god nothing is impossible. という例文が出ていましたが、これと同じとも思えません。 どうか御回答よろしくお願いします。

Ｊohn Galsworthyという作家の『ＴHE CHOICE』という物語の英文を訳しました。 添削と、わからない個所を教えてください。 Some years ago in Chelsea there used to stand at the crossing of a street leading to the Embankment an old man whose living was derived from the cleanliness of boots. 数年前チェルシーで、ブーツを磨くことで生計を立てていた一人の老人がテムズ川岸通りに導く道の交差点に立っているのが常でした。 (1) thereは"チェルシー、そこで"、と訳すのでしょうか？ 訳し方がわからなかったので訳に入れませんでした。 (2) the crossing は交差点ですか？ (3) an old man whose living was derived from the cleanliness of boots. the cleanliness は、"きれい好き、潔癖、清潔"という意味だと思いますが、 ここは靴磨きの意味な のでしょうか？ 彼の生活はthe cleanliness of bootsから出ている（derive from）で 生計を立てているという意味にとったのですが。合っているでしょうか？ よろしくお願い致します。

なんかよくわからなかったので，longmanの英英辞典で調べてみました。 [U] formal if something is in your possession, you own it, or you have obtained it from somewhere in sb's possession ・The house has been in the family's possession since the 1500s. ・That information is not in our possession. in possession of sth と書いてあったので，”wind-skywind”さんの言われているように，in his possessionとすればよいのですね。in possession ofという形にとらわれすぎて混乱していました。というか，my,your,hisなどのときはふつうにin one's possessionというのですね。on one's behalfも同じようなことのようですね。「前置詞＋A＋of」という表現はmy,your,hisなどのときには「前置詞＋one's A」と考ればよいでしょうか。
